Error loading latest xemacs beta with Xft=emacs

After the recent changes to move toward fontconfig, XEmacs 21.5.26
exits at load if I have an init file with font setup code in it. I am
not sure which code causes the crash. I would be happy to do some
debugging--trying different configs. I currently have a version running
--without-xft, but I miss the clean fonts of --with-xft.
I have some set-specifiers at the top of my init, (require 'iso-syntax)
(require 'iso-acc), and some functions that create integrated faces
(i.e. that use set-face-font and custom-set-faces to cobble together
fonts with "pleasing" substitutions). I also set one font that has all
the parts itself as the default:

This is a followup on the message I sent about an hour ago.
Here is an ls -l on the directory
sr1-usan-05$ ls -lt

You can see that the monster paste did seem to get into ECCcurves.c. It
is in the #... file saved at April 19 13:58, and caused the file to grow
to 11752 bytes. (That is small comparied with the amount I tried to
paste.) But the crash didn't occur until April 20, 11:22, 21 hours and
25 minutes later, which was while I was on vacation and XEmacs was just
sitting there.

Dear Bug Team!
Sometimes Gnus crashes as soon as I select a newsgroup in the *group*
buffer. Usually I can enter the summary buffer without any problems,
but this crash has happened several times now. This may be because I
have added a function to gnus-summary-prepare-hook to get rid of the
log buffers resulting from gnus' compilation of newsrc.eld:

Missing keybinding for C-x C-q in experimental vc*.el

I have been eagerly awaiting a version of vc*.el for XEmacs that
supports SVN. I discovered that scop(a)xemacs.org is working on an
experimental version of vc*.el for XEmacs. Yesterday I checked out
a revision from CVS to test it.
Seems to be working ok, but I noticed that the keybinding C-x C-q
which is normally redefined to vc-toggle-read-only by vc*.el, is not
set in this version. Easily solved by simply setting it in my own
.emacs, of course, but I assume that this should not be necessary as
the current documentation indicates that this keybinding is already in
place.
I am using XEmacs 21.4.19 (Debian unstable)
