Hi, Mike! Yes, that works. Thank you very much. My career as a prognosticator is in jeopardy, however, because once I've applied this, it turns out that the 21.5 version of my patch to find packages at run-time in ../xemacs-packages (attached) still doesn't work. [Can you believe it?! :-) ] Your original advice was to modify the root-finding code, and I have done that; with my modification installed, the parent of the xemacs-packages directory is correctly found as a root and a data root, but the xemacs-packages directory does not get searched and added to load-path. This technique worked for 21.4, but I guess there must be an extra step required for 21.5. Mike, do you have any suggestions for debugging this? Thank you and Happy New Year! - vin

I wouldn't characterize that as `breaking', merely as `making a conflict explicit that is already there'. There are actually two cases. (Below I use the term `GR octet' to mean an octet in the range 0xA0..0xFE.) 1) There are only single GR octets in the file (no runs), and these single octets are not at the end of words. This is representative of many West-European languages (e.g., French, German, Danish), and is also a valid BIG5 encoding. Autodetection represents that conflict. Both big5 and iso_8_1 are rated as somewhat-likely, and the coding-priority list decides which one is taken. 2) There are mainly single GR octets in the file, those single octets are not at the end of the words, and some two byte runs of GR octets. This is still representative for the European languages named above. This is _as well_ a valid Big5 encoding, just like the case above. Even though this is the same conflict situation as case 1, autodetect suddenly decides differently here. It rates big5 as somewhat-likely (which is correct) and it rates iso_8_1 as somewhat-unlikely (which is definitively *not* correct, as this *is* a likely iso_8_1 encoding). My argument boils down to the point that these two cases represent the same situation, but are handled differently. It might be that the decision between iso_8_1 and big5 should be made by the coding-priority list, and not by autodetection. OTOH, I don't know enough about statistical distributions of big5 characters in typical BIG5-encoded texts, this might make my argument moot. Maybe a high amount of even-runs of GR octets should cause a quite-probable rating for BIG5, and not just a somewhat-likely?! Anyhow, sjt> On consideration, I don't see how to test that issue without, well, sjt> testing it. OK, let's do so. I see if I can improve the heuristic from Lutz (which is quite rough currently) and will post a patch against 21.5.25 later today. Updating JDE to 2.3.3 18 years, 1 month

FYI, I'm going to sync JDE with upstream 2.3.3 soon, Andy ack'd in private mail. 2.3.3 only, not latest upstream, because 2.3.3 is the last one that works with the old "split" eieio, speedbar, semantic etc and doesn't require the new bundled upstream cedet. It looks like the patch is going to be huge, so I don't intend to post it to xemacs-patches; I gather the CVS commits list will have it anyway.

Fetched it, configured and compiled without problems, and it works since a few minutes. :-) A small suggestion, though: Please remove the tag r21-5-current-beta from the files .dbxrc and .gdbinit in src/. They are generated and that causes locally modified files in my CVS workspace. aspell and ispell-PERSOANL-dictionary problem (sorry for the mistake) 18 years, 1 month

Sorry, in my previous message I wrote ispell-local-dictionary. Actually it is ispell-personal-dictionary. There is a revided post. (as an extra infromation, I am using aspell 0.60.4). Hello to everybody. I have this serious problem using flyspell.el (but actually I think that the problem is really in ispell.el) with GNU aspell (I do not have the same problem with ispell, but I would like to use aspell). The ispell local dictionary is not saved. No matter of what I do. Even if I set the variable ispell-personal-dictionary, the words are not saved. If I ask to save a word, then I get a message "Personal dictionary saved.", but that is not true. Moreover, if set ispell-personal-dictionary and I add manually words to the file, then these words are not used. The ispell local dictionary is not saved. No matter of what I do. Even if I set the variable ispell-local-dictionary, the words are not saved. If I ask to save a word, then I get a message "Personal dictionary saved.", but that is not true. Moreover, if set ispell-local-dictionary and I add manually words to the file, then these words are not used. I tried to post the problem in the aspell mailing list months ago, but no one answered me. Can anybody help me?
