Patch: wrong autoload cookie in whitespace.el in sumo-2005-01-18 19 years, 2 months

I think the autoload cookie in packages/xemacs-packages/text-modes/whitespace.el before (define-minor-mode whitespace-global-mode is wrong. Documentation/implementation discrepancy in font-lock.el 19 years, 2 months

The doc strings of a lot of variables defined in XEmacs' font-lock.el state that they are normally set via `font-lock-defaults'. But in fact none of them will be set by `font-lock-set-defaults-1'. In GNU Emacs these variables can be added with their values as alists to `font-lock-defaults'. Even if the doc string of `font-lock-defaults' in XEmacs' font-lock.el does not mention this possibility, removing the respective notes in the doc strings of variables like `font-lock-syntactic-keywords' would help to prevent stupid people like me from stumbling over this difference between XEmacs and GNU Emacs. -- Ralf

Does anybody else miss the CVS Monitor? 19 years, 2 months

>From a release management standpoint, the new CVS log accumulator is a big step backward. It used to be possible to get a decent idea of who's doing what by just looking in the MUA summary window, but no more. 1. I miss the friendly "CVS Monitor" From header. (whi-i-i-i-ne :) 2. The new subject line is essentially useless. Specifically, the committer is missing, and much of the time the tiny amount of repository information is far too broad to be helpful. 3. This is especially annoying if you don't have working broadband (I pay for it, but I don't get it half the time) because it means you need to download megapatches just to get committer information. 4. The stable RE is going to have to pay close attention to *both* -patches and -cvs if and when we go to commit-without-submit on the assumption that the commit diffs are good enough. At present, he can ignore -cvs if he chooses. (Not my problem at the moment, but it certainly would be a consideration if I'm a candidate for gamma RE or stable RE in the future.) 5. The commit diffs are not an accurate record for review, and if iterated cannot be applied to variant workspaces, since they compress the patch with -w. Even if the patch applies, a diff against the mainline will be spurious. I know that CVS branches aren't terribly useful, but this will make them even less so. The rest of the stuff I can live with, but I really want committer id in the subject, and I think it's quite desirable to give full patches, bandwidth be damned. Other suggestions: I think that it would be nice if the first line of the log would be a 40- or 50-character "theme statement" that could be picked up. Something like Subject: [Commit by ben] 21.5 - rot13 all identifiers for readability where everything after the [] would be from the committer's log. The "21.5" is a pseudo-module, more or less arbitrarily chosen by the committer, as is the short description. Other examples would be unbundled packages such as "xemacs-devel", projects such as "KKCC", and functional divisions like "redisplay". They are an even bigger problem; AFAICT they cannot be used at all with ftp clients that send EPSV as first. I re-installed the old efs 1.32 (upstream v1.22) and did some tests, e.g., with ftp.ca.xemacs.org who does not support Extended Passive Mode. This server answers with `500 Unknown command.' and EFS (and thus the package index update) stumbles over that. This is also true for the current efs (1.33, upstream v1.23). I.e., ftp.ca.xemacs.org and others are not usable without configuration for package updates on Linux (at least, not on those where Luke Mewburn's NetBSD ftp client is used) and probably also not on BSD. Is this widely known? For these sites to work, one must add "-A" to the ftp args *and* one must update the package index twice, there is no other possibility. During the first update, the ftp server will answer with `500 Unknown command' first when the EPRT command is used. The ftp client will stop using extended ftp commands then, and use standard PASV/PORT commands the second time. For this to work from the start, EFS would need to issue the command epsv4 to the ftp client. (Most probably, where lukemftp is used, one needs to add "-A" always; otherwise one gets the inconsistency that Mike already mentioned.) In summary, the situation is a mess. There is no workaround that can be easily described and that will really work. I will now update my Web Site patch as follows: -- I will recommend to fetch and install efs manually in case of `Extended Passive Mode' errors. -- I will recommend to switch mirrors in case of `Unknown command' or any other 500 errors. Problem building packages in a fresh workspace. 19 years, 2 months

I've just had problems trying to build the entire package tree in a freshly made workspace. I checked out the workspace using the form recommended in http://www.xemacs.org/Develop/cvsaccess.html: cvs -z3 -d :pserver:cvs＠cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs checkout packages Builds in this workspace failed because the file meta-targets.rules was missing. Updating the workspace with 'cvs update -d -P' brought in the missing file (and lots of others) and I could then build successfully. Does some CVS module definition need to be updated? I can reproduce this in XEmacs 21.5 (beta18) "chestnut" (+CVS-20050202) [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32, Mule) of Fri Feb 04 2005 on D5DC120J when doing a make all in the xemacsweb module of the XEmacs website.
