Hi,
I wrote the bug report Sept '04 (last year). We finally found the cause of the
problem.
Nothing wrong with xemacs. It was the "klipper" Application of KDE which has bad
interference with the x selection. Stopping klipper and xemacs works o.k.
klipper is known to break several other applications too.

[Bug: 21.4.17] Bad alignment of images

Dear Bug Team!
While I won't want to rule out that this is just a symptom of me being
no Einstein, I have the impression that the handling of the ascent of
images is inconsistent.
In particular, it would appear to me that an image that has its
glyph-baseline set to 100% is apparently _not_ placed just above the
baseline, but is rather hung down from the absolute height of the line
in question. In the case where the height of that image (or the
largest image in the line) is smaller than the height of the current
row, this looks awkward.
However, this effect is not consistent but more or less appears to
affect predominantly taller images in a line. As soon as they have
nontrivial descenders (and consequently a baseline of less than 100%),
the effect is not so noticeable. So it would appear that some
confusion of maximal image and maximal line height (which differ when
letters are also present that are taller than the highest image) is
involved here, getting things mostly right, but often being off by one
or two pixels.
The results look somewhat shabby and staggered. I want to make some
new screen shots with XEmacs and preview-latex, but it seems like I am
stuck between smaller fonts (where this effect shows really badly) or
larger fonts (where XEmacs-21.4 chooses to fill in Latin-1 characters
from some visually incompatible font for some reason). Either screen
shot looks like presenting a toy not suited for serious work, an
impression I would want to avoid to make as an avid fan of XEmacs.
With the given screenshot, take a look at the letter "d" before the
red cursor. It is typical for the effect.

Actually, this info is documented too. It's at the bottom of
`make-image-specifier', which documents the format of the instantiator to
`make-glyph':

If the instantiator specifies data from a file, the data will be read
in at the time that the instantiator is added to the image (which may
be well before when the image is actually displayed), and the
instantiator will be converted into one of the inline-data forms, with
the filename retained using a :file keyword. This implies that the
file must exist when the instantiator is added to the image, but does
not need to exist at any other time (e.g. it may safely be a temporary
file).

`make-image-specifier' is specifically referred to by `make-glyph', so this
cannot be said to be totally obscure.
However, it's true that it's easy to miss among all the other docs.
Where exactly would you prefer that I put these two paragraphs? (i.e. if in
the docs for `make-glyph', where?)

C-h f make-glyph RET returns an impressive amount of information.
However, the most basic things are missing.
Namely: what happens if the specifier refers to image files that are
not existent, that are broken, or that are in a format that XEmacs
does not support? Does make-glyph return nil? Does it return a glyph
that later triggers some error when being used? Does make-glyph throw
an error itself? At what point of time do :file ... and similar
properties actually get evaluated?
In short: what does make-glyph return or throw under what basic error
conditions?

Folks,
Looks like with progress-feedback-use-echo-area "on", under Mac OS X (fink
installed) version of Xemacs 21.4.15, the mercury gauge kills the process.
Turning off the progress-feedback-use-echo-area works around the problem.
I am not sure if this is the same as reported in the PROBLEMS file, but I
figured I would update you folks anyway. Let me know if you need anything
else.

Font locking of LaTeX constructs for specifying verbatim content is
done with syntactic keywords in AUCTeX. There are two features in GNU
Emacs which AUCTeX relies upon and which are not present in XEmacs:
1) The syntax class "generic string delimiter"
The manual describes it like this:
A "generic string delimiter" (designated by `|') starts or ends
a string. This class differs from the string quote class in
that _any_ generic string delimiter can match any other generic
string delimiter; but they do not match ordinary string quote
characters.
This syntax class is primarily meant for use with the
`syntax-table' text property (*note Syntax Properties::). You
can mark any range of characters as forming a string constant,
by giving the first and last characters of the range
`syntax-table' properties identifying them as generic string
delimiters.
For AUCTeX this means that it is possible to place syntax
properties at the opening and closing braces of LaTeX constructs
like "\verb{foo}" which get recognized correctly by functions
like `parse-partial-sexp'.
With the normal string quote syntax class it seems that the start
and end will only be matched if they are the same characters,
e.g. as in "\verb{foo{". I am not sure if I got it all right but
at least the following testcase is not working, i.e. the second
call to `parse-partial-sexp' will not find the closing brace and
point will end up at the end of the buffer:

If you change "foo {bar} baz" to "foo {bar{ baz" it will work.
BTW, it doesn't make a difference if one uses '(7 . ?}) and '(7 .
?{) instead of '(7) as the syntax property.
2) The possibility to plug in one's own syntactic face function
In GNU Emacs one can specify a function for deciding which face a
match during syntactic fontification gets. One has to map
`font-lock-syntactic-face-function' to this function.
Here is its doc string of the latter:
Function to determine which face to use when fontifying
syntactically. The function is called with a single parameter
(the state as returned by `parse-partial-sexp' at the beginning
of the region to highlight) and should return a face.
In AUCTeX it is used to decide if a match should get a comment,
math or verbatim face.
I don't know if these features are used by any other Elisp packages
out there but at least for AUCTeX it would mean that fontification of
verbatim constructs will work in XEmacs.

Interesting. So you are thinking of something that sets the transport
method based on something in `package-get-download-sites' and
`package-get-pre-release-download-sites'? I never thought of doing
that. Could be cool. Could also be too restrictive and a
maintenance PITA. Interesting, nonetheless.

Here is something I was working on a year or so ago. It gives a local
transport, FTP (via EFS), HTTP, and scp. All that needs to be done is
to hook it into package-get.el. This package-transport.el will
obviously live in core.

Simple, you do it in such a way that there is zero impact on existing
package retrieval mechanisms.

Probably not necessary unless you feel package-transport.el is flawed
(very possible, I haven't looked at since 2003). As I said above, all
that needs to be done is to hook package-transport into package-get.
