[Failure] XEmacs 21.2-b37 "Pan", i586-pc-win32

Building works fine.
I only report this as a failure because XEmacs 21.2-b37 crashes during
nmake check
and
nmake check-temacs
related to my use of clearcase.el[1].
I am doing this from home, while connected to the net via my private ISP.
Therefore ClearCase cannot perform the lsregion query of the ClearCase
server located in my company's office.

I'm impressed. This fixes at least several possible causes of nasty
crashes. This patch once again shows that GCPRO, while it may be a
superior implementation technique, is not made for a human mind to get

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I had just done 'C-x C-h C-u M-| gindent" to have GNU indent indent my
buffer and replace the buffer with the output of indent.
The progress bar popped up and I have to wiggle the mouse to actually
get the progress bar to move at a reasonable speed (other it just
seems to hang for a very long time). (Another bug, I think. Does
this happen for anyone else?)
After the progress bar went away, XEmacs decided to GC, the GC cursor
popped up, and boom.
Here is the C traceback. Perhaps not that useful because optimization
was used, but here it is anyway.
Could there be a GC bug in file_truename or some process I/O stuff?
Lately, whenever I get a crash in GC, it seems to be always just after
I've tried to do some kind of I/O like saving the file or auto-saving
the file. How do I go about tracking this down? Since it's
intermittent, I think doing a GC after every command (or whatever that
option is) will take a long time.

This fixes my problems -- thanks a lot. In retrospect this all makes
sense, but it was not intuitive the first time around. I agree that
PSGML should deduce XML or SGML when entering html-mode. I bet this
is going to be a FAQ once XHTML becomes more popular.

Aha! Note that you were parsing the prolog *in SGML mode*! The real
problem here is that the ".html" extension, in conjunction with
auto-mode-alist, puts you into html-mode, which is a descendant of
sgml-mode. Try this. Save your test file to xhtml_test.xhtml. Open
it. XEmacs doesn't recognize that extension, so it is in fundamental
mode. Now type M-x xml-mode. Then type C-c C-p. PSGML now tells you
"XML requires a system ID after a public ID". Hmmm, there are a few
problems with that file. Try this one instead:

Sure, but that isn't the right solution in general. The colon should
not be in sgml-parser-syntax, since that is not good SGML. The right
solution is to avoid assuming sgml-mode when the file extension is
.html. I'm not sure how to do that, unfortunately.
