XEmacs 21 /vs./ my keyboard: I want my DEL back 25 years, 4 months

I rebind my keyboard under X to swap two pairs of keys, `~ & ESC and BS & DEL. (This is of course because such placement is The Way God Intended Them To Be, where God was on an extended visit to DEC during the time that DEC was creating the VT100.) Normally, this is fine: XEmacs run as an X application correctly informs me via `C-h c' in the *scratch* buffer that "DEL runs the command backward-or-forward-delete-char"; when running Gnus and having entered a *Summary*, I learn that "B DEL runs the command gnus-summary-delete-article". When XEmacs is run in an xterm, however, I learn instead that "BS runs the command delete-backward-char" and "B BS is undefined". Worse, it knows that the key marked "Delete" is generating '\010', because it induces help functions just like typing an actual "Control H". I know the keyboard is sending the right characters (\177s generated using C-v): [1157] [14:10:37] beaver:~> od -c ^?^?^?^? 0000000 177 177 177 177 \n 0000005 It's not a BS, it's a DEL. There's an important difference between them, and I picked the specified meaning myself. What is giving XEmacs the idea that it should make some silly extra remapping just because I'm running it inside an xterm? XEmacs 21.2-b7, Linux RH5.1, assorted XFree 3.3.2.3 RPMs.

a problem with configure 25 years, 4 months

First of all, the Mule of 20.4 and the Mule of 21.0 are entirely incompatible. You would not be able to bootstrap Mule off 20.4. You are most likely putting xemacs-20.4 ahead of 21.0 on the path. This is wrong, but there is no documentatino to tell you any of this. Try this for your package=path configure option. It should work: --package-path=~/.xemacs::/usr/local/xemacs/xemacs-packages::/usr/lib/xemacs-20.4 Make sure that you get those colons right. If you have your mule packages in a different directory (/usr/local/xemacs/mule-packages), it should look like this: --package-path=~/.xemacs::/usr/local/xemacs/mule-packages:/usr/local/xemacs/xemacs-packages::/usr/lib/xemacs-20.4 This should do for you what you want. Later, add new packages into /usr/local/xemacs/xemacs-packages, and they will override the stuff in 20.4. -- Colin

Building from CVS 25 years, 4 months

I had much difficulty in getting cvs update to work on the packages a few days ago, probably due to server congestion. When I finally got the update working, I ran into compile problems. My last compile of the betas was probably in about September, and I made the mistake of making clean too early in the cycle, so I do not have a beta to work with. I have the rpm of 20.4 on CD, so I installed that, hoping to bootstrap from it. Unfortunately, this one seems to have no mule support in it. I downloaded the mule-base package, and untarred it first into /usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages, then into /usr/lib/xemacs-20.4, where the rpm installs. An attempt to `make bindist' in the packages, gives me: xemacs -no-autoloads -batch -l ../../package-compile.el -- -- add-log.el Symbol's function definition is void: paths-find-emacs-roots An attempt to `make all' of emacs proper gives me: Dumping under the name xemacs Purespace usage: 894384 of 894384 (100%). Testing for Lisp shadows ... Symbol's function definition is void: list-load-path-shadows xemacs exiting. Followed a little later by: Compiling files without .elc... /opt2/src/xemacs/xemacs-20/src/xemacs -batch -vanilla -f batch-byte-compile lisp/./finder-inf.el At this point, make falls into deep meditation on its own navel, never to return. Top shows the make sleeping. I have reconfigured to specify package-path for the newly-installed mule-base package, to no avail. My CVS updates have, I assumed, left me with 21.0.something, rather than the 21.2's. I seem to remember from sometime ago that these would bootstrap from 20.4.
