Here you go. Hmm. This might not be want you wanted. This is from
my hg repo from a week or two ago, and not from the 2008-06-01 tree.
And I see the backtrace is different if I get rid of the splash screen
and then close the window.
I can provide more info for whichever build you think will be most
useful to track this down. I don't know anything about X so this is
hard for me to look into myself.

ISO 8859/6 is not XEmacs-specific. It's an international standard.
Whether any Arabic-speakers use it any more, I don't know.
The Emacs-specific charsets are thai-xtis, the split-format Big5, the
Unicode-JIT sets (since we have no support for them other than
maintaining identity in a buffer) and (to some extent) the
mule-unicode sets. AFAIK everything else is based on international,
or at least national, standards.

I'm building VM from XEmacs package CVS updated last night, apparently
version 8.0.10-devo:

However, it has a number of serious problems. First, I'm not sure
what the exact issue is (it doesn't seem to be any of the ones
described below), but VM blows up in the smoketest build. I don't
think it's a good idea to have this version in the mainline of CVS for
this reason. It probably should be moved to a CVS branch, and the
mainline reverted to the previous released version.
Second, it can't determine its own version. See the Package: line
below, or the X-Mailer header of this message.
Third, it gets XEmacs's version wrong. See the X-Mailer header of
this message; my actual XEmacs version is

Fourth, when started VM immediately errors and is unable to set up the
summary buffer because the defcustoms `vm-configure-pixmapdir' and

FILENAME argument to expand-file-name. The following patch
illustrates one way to work around this problem.

Finally, if I understand the above, VM is not going to be able to find
its pixmap directory. The two vm-configure-* variables are nil; in
the XEmacs package architecture, the pixmaps will be in xemacs/etc/vm,
not in xemacs-packages/lisp/ or xemacs-packages/lisp/vm, and
data-directory will point to xemacs binary's own data, not to package
data.

Hi,
sorry for coming back so late ... I had a disk crash, a lot
of work and other higher priority tasks so did not finish
putting in of VM 8.0.10 into CVS. While I still do not have
much time these days I will try to address those bugs
reported by Stephen and others.
And hey Stephen, VM 8 is not that bad, there is a bunch of
people running successfully, but you are not the standard
user ;-)

With XEmacs 21.5 (beta28) "fuki" 89406c31b125+ [Lucid] (powerpc-apple-darwin9.4.0, Mule)
compilation fails because of the undefined variable
Vcharset_arabic_iso8859_7

src/xemacs-hg/src/objects-xlike-inc.c line 361

Commenting out the variable Vcharset_arabic_iso8859_7 fixes the error.

Reformatted.
* mule/cyril-util.el (standard-display-table)): Removed. It wasn't
used anyway.
* mule/cyril-util.el (standard-display-cyrillic-translit):
Rewrite it to work with character tables as display tables, and
not to abort with an error.

1) Download the packages that you want to install from:
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/
2) Unpack them to: [1]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):
- ----------------------------------------------
1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.1.14):

1) Options -> Manage Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases
2) Options -> Manage Packages -> List and Install
