I have this in my init...

| "Save the extent under point's string to kill ring."
| (interactive)
| (kill-new (extent-string (extent-at (point)))))

can't compile xemacs21.5.28
15 years, 11 months
Uwe Brauer
Hello
On Kubuntu I try to compile xemacs 21.5
However when running configure
./configure --with-mule --with-xim --with-xfs --with-xim
I obtain an error message which I don't understand.
checking for Berkeley db.h... no
*** PANIC *** The C compiler can no longer build working executables.
*** PANIC *** Please examine the tail of config.log for runtime errors.
*** PANIC *** The most likely reason for this problem is that configure
*** PANIC *** links with shared libraries, but those libraries cannot be
*** PANIC *** found at run time.
I examined the tail of config.log but can't find which libraries are
missing.
Any idea?

For that functionality you need to have a session manager installed
and enabled (I know of at least desktop.el, provided in the XEmacs
packages, and session.el, which should be easily findable by Google).
I'll try to remember to find and fix the message that implies that
session management is built-in.
> Actually, I do not know if I had any buffer with 'autosave'.
Then you almost certain do; autosave is a standard feature that you
must explicitly shut off. If XEmacs found no current autosave files,
then you were almost certainly fully saved (to within 300 keystrokes,
including commands), so at most you lose 300 characters of new content.
Any "big" lost changes would either be a "forgotten" deletion (annoying,
but probably easy to reproduce) or a global search/replace. There are
probably other possibilities, but the principle that any "big" changes
had to involve some automatic, reproducible process, and not your
creativity:-) is valid AFAIK.
Note that autosave works in a lazy fashion as well as using
"recover-session". What I mean is that suppose XEmacs crashes after a
buffer is autosaved but before you explicitly save it. Then the next
few times you work in XEmacs, you forget about that file. But today
you realize you need to work on it. At this point, XEmacs will notice
the autosave file and warn you that you did make unsaved changes to
the file, and offer to revert to the autosaved version (you can even
request a diff to find out if you want the changes or not).

Thank you!

Re: 答复: the evil iso-accents-mode: babel does not work

Vladimir G. Ivanovic
My \mail reader (Thunderbird 2.0) can't read any of these messages
even though the encoding is shown as Chinese Simplified (GB2312). Of
course, I don't have any Chinese fonts on my system...
If other people are having similar problems, then perhaps we should
require posters to use UTF-8, for example, so that all members of this
list can read the messages. If no one else is having similar problems,
then I'll just automatically delete any GB2312 encoded message.
(Actually, I'm going to do that anyway unless there's an easy fix that
does not result in characters that I cannot read, like Chinese,
Japanese, Korean, Arabic, etc.)

Sorry, I forgot to add the list as an addressee.
Does anyone else get irritated that replying to an xemacs-beta posting
requires extra steps to include the list and remove the poster?

Is it reasonable to use the specifiers 'minimum-line-descent' and
'minimum-line-ascent'?
In combination, they seem to do the job, but I don't know if there are
any ill side effects (except one: the (block) cursor is in the wrong
place, above the text, instead of on top of the text.)

Hi Uwe,
do you really need iso-accents-mode?
It looks somehow outdated.
With buffer example code
,----
| % Local Variables:
| % buffer-file-coding-system: iso-8859-15
| % End:
|
| how to save œ other than utf8
`----
it works for me with GNU and XEmacs alike. Always fine after
reopening. Not so, if the local vars part is missing.
Thats with
GNU Emacs 22.1.1 (i586-suse-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
2.12.0) of 2007-11-24 on dede
XEmacs 21.5 (beta28) "fuki" (+CVS-20070806) [Lucid] (i386-suse-linux, Mule)
of Sun Sep 23 2007 on verdi
So maybe it's done with updating?
If not, what Steve explained indicates some limitation.
Sure there are several ways out. Emacs can do better.
But let's install some recent XEmacs first, otherwise we are
in danger of wasting our time.
,----
|
| The problem is you may not want to do that, if you have a lot of files
| that use the 1/2 character of ISO 8859/1 and only a few in French
| requiring œ.
|
| Check the values of the variable
|
| latin-unity-preapproved-coding-system-list
|
| and take note of the warnings in its docstring:
|
| "*List of coding systems used without querying the user if feasible.
|
| The first feasible coding system in this list is used. The special values
| 'preferred and 'buffer-default may be present:
|
| buffer-default Use the coding system used by `write-region', if feasible.
| preferred Use the coding system specified by `prefer-coding-system'
| if feasible.
|
| \"Feasible\" means that all characters in the buffer can be represented by
| the coding system. Coding systems in `latin-unity-ucs-list' are always
| considered feasible. Other feasible coding systems are computed by
| `latin-unity-representations-feasible-region'.
|
| Most users will want at least one ISO 8859 coding system in this list, as
| otherwise pure ASCII files will not be preapproved. (This is a bug, due
| to the limitation of applicability of this package to Latin and universal.
| The condition that an ISO 8859 coding system be included will be satisfied
| implicitly by 'buffer-default or 'preferred for most users, but it can be
| annoying for users of ISO 2022 or EUC coding systems.)
|
| Note that the first universal coding system in this list shadows all other
| coding systems. In particular, if your preferred coding system is a universal
| coding system, and 'preferred is a member of this list, latin-unity will
| blithely convert all your files to that coding system. This is considered a
| feature, but it may surprise most users. Users who don't like this behavior
| should move 'preferred to `latin-unity-preferred-coding-system-list'."

[Bug: 21.4.21] Bad compilation of mapc+lambda+assoc
15 years, 11 months
Jacques Duthen
--text follows this line--
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
I have a simple file containing the following variable and function:
(defvar jd-bug-xemacs-01-alist '(("-" . "01")))
(defun jd-bug-xemacs-01 (file)
(mapc
(lambda (assoc)
(setq file (concat file (car assoc) (cdr assoc))))
jd-bug-xemacs-01-alist)
file)
When I byte-compile/load this file, I get the following:
ELISP> (jd-bug-xemacs-01 "foo")
*** Eval error *** Symbol's value as variable is void: old-assoc
ELISP> (symbol-function 'jd-bug-xemacs-01)
#<compiled-function
(file)
"...(7)" [file jd-bug-xemacs-01-alist mapc #<compiled-function
(assoc)
"...(9)" [old-assoc file] 3>] 3>
If I rename the local variable "assoc" into "ass", it works ok!
I hope you can reproduce the bug and solve it.

How to install xemacs packages?
15 years, 11 months
Wei Weng
Hi all.
I think I read from an earlier email that said you need to install the XEmacs
packages in addition to installing the binaries, but I can not seem to find
the instruction of how to do it.
Is there an instruction somewhere?
Thanks
Wei
