================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
I was within VM, reading Channel 4’s Snowmail
(http://www.channel4.com/news/snowmail/ ); I pressed C-p, then C-z to
suspend the gnuclient console. XEmacs disappeared. I can’t make the time to
debug this right now, but here’s the C backtrace;

[AC 21.5] with-string-as-buffer-contents initializes point to eob
16 years, 1 month
Stephen J. Turnbull
APPROVE COMMIT 21.5
The attached patch just fixes a test that misuses this macro.
RFC: I think Aidan's expectation that w-s-a-b-c will initialize point
to (point-min) is very natural. Should we make it so? Or should we
just document the correct usage of the macro?
If so, is somebody willing to grep the core and package sources for
uses and check to see if there are any conflicting uses? Also compare
to GNU, if they have it!
Note: the test as written will remain correct if we make this change.

reftex needs to be upgraded.
16 years, 1 month
Uwe Brauer
Hello
I realized that the reftex pkg as provided by Xemacs corresponds to
reftex 4.21, while the official version, now maintained by the auctex
team is 4.33.
The latest version contains some important bug fixes, I tested it.
I asked Carsten Dominik, the original author of reftex, who stills
figures as the maintainer of the xemacs pkg. He prefers us to upgrade
the package.
I had a look it seems much easier than the installation of auctex. So I
would not mind doing the upgrade, but I am not sure whether I have write
access to this directory in the CVS tree.

a thought on coding systems
16 years, 1 month
Julian Bradfield
There are, alas, more coding systems around in the world than there
were. In particular, there's the GBK system, and what's worse, there
are GBK encoded articles on Usenet that claim to be GB2312. Firefox
at least seems to silently accommodate this and treat GB2312 as GBK.
Standard XEmacs doesn't support GBK. There is an add-on, but I haven't
seen whether it works, and it's a typical horrible CCL/conversion
mess.
It occurred to me that it would be very easy to make a small extension
to the ISO2022 coding systems: add a new property ('gr-gl-is-g2 or
something) that would mean: if you see a sequence c1,c2 of characters
in the GR,GL ranges, treat it as referring to (c1 & 0x7F, c2) in the
G2 charset of the coding system.
Then one would just add this property to the gb coding system, set g2
to be a new charset representing the lower columns of GBK, and Bob's
your uncle.
(This is also, IMHO, how Big5 should have been handled.)
Thoughts? I might well do it for myself, since nowadays I compile my own
XEmacs everywhere anyway, but I wondered if it might be worth having
in the mainstream - in which case, I'd propose using one of the
remaining free official 2D charsets for the lower half of GBK.

[Bug: 21.4.15] crash doing ediff
16 years, 1 month
Jakob Heitz
I ran ediff on two buffers and it hung. Then I killed it.
It's done this several times before.
Fri Oct 24 12:46:40 ~>
Fatal error (1).
Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.
Your version of XEmacs was distributed with a PROBLEMS file that may describe
your crash, and with luck a workaround. Please check it first, but do report
the crash anyway. Please report this bug by invoking M-x report-emacs-bug,
or by selecting `Send Bug Report' from the Help menu. If necessary, send
ordinary email to `crashes(a)xemacs.org'. *MAKE SURE* to include the XEmacs
configuration from M-x describe-installation, or equivalently the file
Installation in the top of the build tree.
*Please* try *hard* to obtain a C stack backtrace; without it, we are unlikely
to be able to analyze the problem. Locate the core file produced as a result
of this crash (often called `core' or `core.<process-id>', and located in
the directory in which you started XEmacs or your home directory), and type
gdb /usr/pkg/bin/xemacs core
then type `where' at the debugger prompt. No GDB on your system? You may
have DBX, or XDB, or SDB. (Ask your system administrator if you need help.)
If no core file was produced, enable them (often with `ulimit -c unlimited'
in case of future recurrance of the crash.

babel.el string-make-unibyte
16 years, 1 month
Uwe Brauer
Hello
There are at least two versions of babel.el which allows to use the
babelfish translation service.
- the first, original one, by Eric Marsden seems GNU emacs
specific, although it talks about Xemacs.
However the pkg does not work since it complains about
string-make-unibyte which seems specific GNU emacs.
Is there any Xemacs (Mule) function which does the same thing and could
then be aliased?
The relevant code is just
(defun babel-form-encode (pairs)
"Return PAIRS encoded for forms."
(require 'w3-forms)
(mapconcat
(lambda (data)
(concat (w3-form-encode-xwfu (string-make-unibyte (car data))) "="
(w3-form-encode-xwfu (string-make-unibyte (cdr data)))))
pairs "&"))
The other more recent version
by Juergen Hoetzel <juergen(a)hoetzel.info>
is even more demanding emacs 22 is needed and the following functions
are not known to be defined
** The following functions are not known to be defined:
sentence-end, url-retrieve-synchronously, babel-make-unibyte
However
(cond ((fboundp 'string-make-unibyte)
(fset 'babel-make-unibyte #'string-make-unibyte))
((fboundp 'string-as-unibyte)
(fset 'babel-make-unibyte #'string-as-unibyte))
(t
(fset 'babel-make-unibyte #'identity)))
Tells me that is again about string-make-unibyte.
The 2 other functions I don't know
sentence-end, url-retrieve-synchronously
do there exist and Xemacs equivalent?
It seems that url-retrieve-synchronously causes problem as the following
shows.

composite characters
16 years, 1 month
Julian Bradfield
For various reasons, I'm spending a lot of time in the MULE code at
the moment, and I was just wondering:
Does anybody actually use the composite characters feature in its
current form?

This is a long-known issue. The installation documentation warns
about it, as do the release notes. It's also very easy to work
around:
cd /usr/local
mkdir -p lib/xemacs
cd lib/xemacs
wget ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/xemacs-sumo.tar.gz
tar xzf xemacs-sumo.tar.gz
rm xemacs-sumo.tar.gz
so it's not something that is going to generate a lot of interest from
the core developers at this point in time. Patches are welcome.

I'll look into that, but it will be a week or so. Maybe somebody else
will get to it sooner. XEmacs should not crash just because Lisp is
missing.

No. By the time you get to a crash, XEmacs is dead, and you're stuck
with system-specific methods. What did you have in mind?
If you've got a decent terminal with plenty of scrollback, you can cut
and paste, or you can use something like "gdb xemacs | tee
/tmp/gdb.log", or you can use gdb's own command logging facilities
(assuming you're on a system where the debugger is gdb, which isn't
necessarily the case).
