I'd appreciate if our coding-system specialists could comment on this.
Here is what I can observe:
Ah, I missed to mention you should do this in the *scratch* buffer,
which will be in "Lisp Interaction" mode in a standard setup.
NB: In any buffer try
C-h m (describe-mode)
to find out which mode it is in.

Ah, thanks.

Ah, that could be part of the problem.
Try creating a new .txt file an paste there.
The file you're opening might force a certain coding system.
But I get the same problem in my mule-enabled
"XEmacs 21.5 (beta28) \"fuki\" (+CVS-20070629) [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32, Mule) of Sat Jun 30 2007 on TANG"

Do you get a "~" displayed instead?
That's what I get, with the pasted character being described as:
Char: — (U+2014 chinese-cns11643-1 33 55) point=1 of 1(0%) column 0
That's what I get in a fundamental-mode buffer.
Page
http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20070622-000002.xml
asserts it's charset=iso-8859-1:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
but then it contains
evolved nature—human nature
which doesn't make sense to me.
Above page is not "Valid HTML 4.01 Transitional" as it claims!
See
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.psychologytoday.com%2F...
It doesn't complain about line 440 though (not sure whether this is
because of the many errors before that point).

Please try the test above in the *scratch* buffer and send us the results.

Gimpel Software's FlexeLint (the unix-equivalent of PC-Lint) is an awesome
tool. Has anyone configured it to produce log out that can be handled by
XEmacs' compilation-mode?

Hi,
In a private communication with Stephen J. Turnbull related to the
release and sync of Hyperbole 5.0.1 to the package tree we came into the
subject of Copyrights and GPLv3 that is of a broader interest. So I move
the discussion to the list ...

According to the copyright statements in the README and the texinfo
manual it is the "or later" variant.

Hmm.. Well I was just about to start working on 5.0.2 for getting a
v3-version out. What is the problem? This is a package. How can that
"flip all of XEmacs"?

Hello,
when using the pc-select mode, normal keystrokes are recorded in the
history which is usually unwanted.
Example:
| $ xemacs -nw -vanilla
| M-x version
| XEmacs 21.5 (beta28) "fuki" [Lucid] (i386-redhat-linux, Mule) of Fri Jun 29 2007 on xenbuilder4.fedora.phx.redhat.com
| M-x load-library pc-select
| M-x pc-select-mode
| M-% foo bar
| up up up
| C-x M-: --> the '(previous-line 1)' commands are recorded but the
| wanted '(query-replace ...)' is lot of entries away
This seems to be caused by calling (call-interactively) with an 'arg'
argument like in:
| (defun pc-select-move-line-up (&optional arg)
| ...
| (interactive "p")
| (setq zmacs-region-stays pc-select-keep-regions)
| (setq this-command 'previous-line)
| (call-interactively 'previous-line arg))
Attached patch removes 'arg' from all these calls.
Enrico

Hi Jesper, Norbert, thanks for getting wide-edit into XEmacs package
edit-utils!
I see three areas of improvement:
Yes, `provide' and autoload cookies should be used in wide-edit.el as
well, and documentation updated accordingly (require instead of
load). Any objections, Jesper?
wide-edit.el should not execute top-level code upon load.
I would suggest to wrap the top-level code in a defun like
`wide-edit-enable'.
The behaviors feature in XEmacs 21.5 can make direct use of that function and another one to `wide-edit-disable'.
See (info "(lispref)Enabling Behavior")
I might be able to provide a patch which would not break current uses
of wide-edit.
Finally, I found an issue when I discussed and tested wide-edit while
online with Jesper in #xemacs over a year ago. When user adds
newlines to the matches in the *grep* buffer, then C-x C-s is getting
unexpected content for all but the first match per file. While
implementing this fully would be a feature, I think the user should be
kept from falling into this trap. I might look into that one as well,
I just want to hear, Jesper, whether you would be in favor of these
changes.
If anyone else wants to tackle any of the above, I'd be a happy tester.
Best regards!
Adrian

Having just found out the various font lock methods, I discovered that
lazy-lock can be convinced to not defer the fontification of lines
subsequent to any changes. I even got it to work for a short period of
time before my .xemacs and custom.el files conspired against me. But,
according to the docs, lazy-lock is not as good as lazy-shot (slower than
doing it all in one go, etc). Alas, lazy-shot can't seem to be convinced
to fontify subsequent lines until they are actually changed.
Is there a way to get lazy-shot to behave this way?

I tried configuring 21.5.28 on Solaris10/Intel with this command:
LDFLAGS='-R/opt/app/nonc++/zlib-1.2/lib -L/opt/app/nonc++/zlib-1.2/lib \
-R/opt/app/nonc++/libpng-1.2/lib -L/opt/app/nonc++/libpng-1.2/lib \
-R/opt/app/nonc++/xpm-3.4k/lib -L/opt/app/nonc++/xpm-3.4k/lib' \
CPPFLAGS='-I/opt/app/nonc++/zlib-1.2/include \
-I/opt/app/nonc++/libpng-1.2/include -I/opt/app/nonc++/xpm-3.4k/include' \
./configure --prefix=/opt/app/xemacs-21.5.28 --with-optimization \
--with-error-checking=none
and get this error:
./configure: Usage error:
Invalid type list supplied. Valid types for the --with-error-checking
option are:
byte_code display extents gc glyphs malloc structures text types.
A prefix of "no" (eg, "notype" for "type") turns a type off.
Types not explicitly specified or negated take their defaults.
The list of defaults is
"byte_code,display,extents,gc,glyphs,malloc,structures,text,types".
Prefixing `all' or
`none' to the list sets all defaults to on and off respectively.
`yes' as the sole argument is equivalent to omitting the argument.
Use `./configure --help' to show usage.
Using --help doesn't mention "none" or "all" either.
I worked around it with this setting:
--with-error-checking=nobyte_code,nodisplay,noextents,nogc,noglyphs,nomalloc,nostructures,notext,notypes

I built 21.5.28 on my Mac this evening (Mac OS X 10.4.10, Apple's X11).
When I open VM the face for the header values is ugly (small, slanted, sans
serif). I tried globally changing the font to courier, but those faces
didn't change. See the two attached JPEG snapshots. The first is from
v.28, the second from v.27. I see a call to (custom-set-faces) in my
~/.xemacs/custom.el. I don't know what the source of its face
specifications are (it's called with no args). I don't see any other face
manipulation code in my init.el or custome.el files.d
Skip
P.S. In the help for (custom-set-faces) "associates" is misspelled.

Warning:
Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->
"Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the
list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
To disable this warning and stick with the old behavior, you can explicitly
initialize `mail-user-agent' to 'sendmail-user-agent .

Out of the box compiling on Solaris 10 w/ gcc 3.4.1 fails for me with this
output:

With a bit of googling I landed here:
http://calypso.tux.org/pipermail/xemacs-beta/2005-February/004661.html
which suggested wrapping
# if __GNUC__ <= 2
...
#endif
around the GCC va_list stuff. That seems to allow compilation to proceed.
Not sure yet if it breaks something else.

No. Just use the list; that will be much more effective than writing
email to individuals.

Vin
