[Bug: 21.5-b28] Crash in VM piping message to nonexistent command

I get a reliable crash when piping a message in VM to a nonexistent Unix

I see the same problem when building the packages with a recent CVS
snapshot of XEmacs.
The above patch avoids the problem 'Cannot open load file: "ccl"'
in pccl-20.el but then the build fails with a segmentation fault
later:

Well, LANG does determine what encoding subprocesses believe that data
passed to them from XEmacs is in, so there is a decent argument for XEmacs
to set it if it knows it’s going to be passing data in that encoding.

Right. This has changed since you wrote your site-start.el; the current
situation is that when you start XEmacs in a ja_JP.UTF-8 locale like so:

If the user is under Unix the language environment is normally determined
from the environment (and rightfully so), where the most-used coding system
is as granular as it gets. For zh_TW.Big5, the effective Unicode precedence
list should place Big5 before the CNS character sets; for zh_TW.EUC-TW, it
should place the CNS character sets before Big5, since they are what EUC-TW
encodes; and for zh_TW.UTF-8 it should place Big5 before CNS, since Big5 is
far more popular than CNS. There are no other POSIX locales specific to
Taiwan.
That is, under Unix there is no way to automatically work out that two
Chinese-as-used-on-Taiwan language environments should only differ in the
preferred Unicode precedence list of the user, so if we are to offer such
differing (XEmacs) language environments, the user needs to call Lisp to do
this. And (set-language-environment "Chinese-UTF-8-prefer-CNS”) (or some
other less unwieldy name) is not hugely less awkward than
set-language-unicode-precedence-list.
If the user is under Win32, it seems even less likely that it can be
automatically determined that a given user prefers CNS over Big5, since the
only Traditional Chinese language environments available are based on Big5.

Maybe, but that’s not what you wrote. Your comment was above
set-language-unicode-precedence-list, and said that *that* interface was
wrong, whereas as you describe it there, *that* interface is the right one,
and *set-unicode-precedence-list* is mostly useless, which is a position I
agree with wholeheartedly.

Add a
(eval-when-compile
(debug-print

to one of the files in question, and try again. mule-lisp-directory should
correspond to a directory with ccl.el in it; I suspect the package compile
environment either picks up an older installed xemacs-21.5 binary when you
wanted to use one that is running in-place, or it confuses the
path-searching code of the desired binary sufficiently that it thinks
mule-lisp-directory is under the installation prefix.

I hit the same problem with the latest CVS 21.5 and the latest set of
release and pre-release packages. going back to the previous beta
version resolved the problem, no other changes.

None of the language environments in XEmacs CVS currently use
set-language-unicode-precedence-list; if they had done, Stephen is correct
that such a call in startup.el would override them.
Code in site-start.el is called after that, though, as you worked out.

Huh. Well, an issue with this is that some of the X11 keysyms are defined to
map explicitly to non-Unicode character sets, and some are defined to map to
Unicode. Would it be appropriate for Zcaron to map to ISO 8859-15 in Western
Europe, despite that the standards say it should be assigned to ISO 8859-2?
The answer though is that people don’t care, as long as their files are
written to disk correctly.

Well, that’s not quite true, though yes, it does also require also a good
bit of XEmacs knowledge to be able to say that. This code tells every
non-ASCII character to generate the XEmacs character it would map to when
converted to Unicode, and then converted back using the latest values for
language-unicode-precedence-list:

But for most people that code should not be necessary if the locale was
correctly determined at startup (before the window-system code) and if each

year, so examining LANG may no longer be necessary.

Let's try this again. Just crashed trying to do a bug report.
I am having a horrible time trying to find a stable version of Xemacs
for a 64-bit Ubuntu Edgy system. I've tried all of the executables
that are available for Edgy and no luck. I get a segfault when first
starting Xemacs. Using "--vanilla" works more often, but that leaves
me with no customizations. Sometimes Xemacs is quite stable, staying
up for days, then crashing when I try to do SVN or CVS, or sometimes
just crashing while editing. Very disconcerting.
