Right. That’s why XEmacs defaults to another font, of the same size, for
italics.
(font-instance-name (face-font-instance 'default nil 'ascii))

I don’t think Xft is good enough to be made the default, specifically its
Mule support (no real logic to match non-ASCII character sets to fonts,
apart from the hard-coded support for Japanese) and its performance. X11.app
appears to do double buffering unconditionally, or something similarly
performance-enhancing--while there is visible flicker with Xft XEmacs while
using it, it can be much worse with other X11 implementations, in my
experience.

21.5.28: default font changed from courier to lucidatypewriter
17 years, 6 months
Ville Skyttä
Upgrading from 21.5.27 to 21.5.28 (no config changes) changes the default
monospace font from courier to lucidatypewriter for me.
I don't like this change; is there something I can do to change it back
without modifying runtime config files (this is for the Fedora XEmacs
package - users shouldn't modify their configs to keep existing default font
in this case IMO)?
Or if this is not intentional and someone wants to help out with restoring the
previous default, what kind of information would be useful in order to track
it down?
Installation info attached. LANG is en_US.UTF-8.

[Bug: 21.4.19] Xemacs Unstable on 64-bit Systems [was: file auto-autoloads.el is newer]

Martin, Stephen et al,
I don't know anything about 64-bit systems, but shouldn't size_t
really work correctly in the parsesndfile() call?
In any case, this patch apparently works around a real bug. Please
comment.

I see you are using a 64-bit build on Linux. This will crash with
native

Dear Randy,
Thanks for offering to investigate this problem. Please do look into
this, I will work with you to make sure your patch passes muster.
Notice that I cc'ed the xemacs-beta mailing list. That is the place
to discuss development issues like this. When the time comes to
submit the final patch (or one near to final form), please submit the
patch to xemacs-patches(a)xemacs.org.
Thank you for working on this.
Regards,
Vin Shelton
PS. FWIW, I just applied Hans de Graaff's sound patch to the 21.4
branch and will apply it to 21.5 as well.

By "sound" do you mean ESD? ESD used to do very evil things with
signals, including a huge race condition. We've deprecated it since
like the year 2000 because of that. I have no idea whether it works
any better now.
Other than that I don't know of any sound-specific issues.
