Since this mail is relevant to XEmacs beta more than to AUCTeX-devel,
I forward it here.
I sometimes wonder whether XEmacs development happens in Potemkin
villages nowadays. And it is sad that the "could not care less"
attitude is not just restricted to packages under my care.
It is not a matter of Emacs/XEmacs cultural differences. It is one of
alive/dead project cultural differences.

Thanks for the bug report. As Stephen mentioned, this is an area that
has been undergoing active work in the last couple of releases. In
any case, a few more details would help. Is s: a samba share? Also,
please send us the permissions on s:\Misc\Todo.txt as well as the
s:\Misc directory.
Thanks,
Vin

Which macro, which call? The problem you reported was
Using a fresh CVS checkout of XEmacs trunk the following snippet
returns "1" when evaluated whereas it returns "5" in GNU Emacs 21.3,
CVS GNU Emacs and XEmacs 21.4.15.
(with-temp-buffer
(with-syntax-table (make-syntax-table)
(insert "foo bar")
(backward-sexp 1)
(point)))
If `set-syntax-table' is used instead of `with-syntax-table', CVS
XEmacs returns "5" as well, so I suppose that there is a problem in
`with-syntax-table' or a function called by it.
You presumably mean the macro `with-syntax-table', but it might be a
good idea to explicitly say so and quote the code in question.

gnus 5.10.8 is now available as a pre-release XEmacs package (the
current stable package is gnus 5.10.7). I've been using it for quite
awhile with no problems, but I only use a subset of its features. So
some additional testers would be appreciated.
If you'd like to try it out, the steps are
1. select a prerelease archive from the Pre-releases menu (Tools->
Packages->Set Download Site->Pre-releases)
2. update your package index (Tools->Packages->Update Package Index)
3. get the list of available packages (Tools->Packages->List and
Install)
4. middle-click on the line for gnus
5. download and install (Packages->Install/Remove Selected)
If you run into any problems, please report it on
xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org.
thanks,
mike

Hi Phil,
Sorry to bug you about licensing. The XEmacs folk want to ship your
tour too (IIRC all that's really blocking it is getting someone to
hook it into the Help menu, though ideally they want to somehow get it
to show up in a buffer so you didn't have to Alt-Tab back and forth to
it:-D .) But they'd prefer different license terms.
1. Is it possible you could release your Emacs guided tour into the
public domain?
2. Just curious: Do you happen to have a video or audio version of
your first lecture? It would look great up there with all the videos
at http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=emacs+-amayita :-)
P.S. Thanks very much for writing the quick tour.
Regards,
Jason Spiro

I think that I might need to get something like (add-hook
'vhdl-mode-hook 'my-vhdl-mode-hook)
into C:\Documents and Settings\douga\.xemacs\custom.el
on my windows xp machine. Is there a website around that gives the
install steps?
I have the vhdl-mode-3.33.16.tar.gz file on my desktop.
Thanks,

Hello there,
writing some posting in Gnus (message), I got another crash. This time
it's reproducible with the autosaved message, which I'll append as
well as the backtrace.
Holger
Hello,
I can't compile XEmacs 21.4 on Mac OS X with external widget support because
the syntax for making shared libraries is not the same as on other platforms.
I don't know about XEmacs 21.5; I can't use it so I don't have it handy.
With the very few minutes that I had this weekend, I spotted that the culprit
is the -shared option which doesn't exist on Darwin gcc; it has a -dynamiclib
option or something, but just using that instead wasn't enough to fix the
problem. I don't have time to look into it further.
Could someone already knowledgeable in Mac OS X system have a look at it
please ?
Thank you very much.

Dear XEmacs:
I am using
XEmacs 21.4 (Patch19) for i586-pc-win32
which is installed from the setup exe.
I am also using
CVSNT 2.5.03 (Scorpio) Bulid 2382
My laptop windows system is
MS Windows XP Professional version 2002 SP2
When I use the CVSNT from a command Prompt shell window, there is no
problem, for example
D:\>set cvsroot=:sspi:hbsn111111051:/cvs/repositories
D:\>cvs login
Logging in to :sspi:WXie@hbsn111111051:2401:/cvs/repositories
CVS Password:
D:\>
When I use the CVSNT from the shell of XEmacs, after I press ENTER for
the CVS Password, the process stops there, the command prompt will not
come out, for example
D:\>set cvsroot=:sspi:hbsn111111051:/cvs/repositories
set cvsroot=:sspi:hbsn111111051:/cvs/repositories
D:\>cvs login
cvs login
Logging in to :sspi:WXie@hbsn111111051:2401:/cvs/repositories
CVS Password:
cvs [login aborted]: received interrupt signal
D:\>cvs login
cvs login
Logging in to :sspi:WXie@hbsn111111051:2401:/cvs/repositories
CVS Password:
cvs [login aborted]: received interrupt signal
D:\>
I do not know whether this is bug, but this causes certain inconvenience
for me. Could you please help on this?
Best regards,
XIE Wensheng

I just noticed that my new gnus package installs some stuff into
etc/gnus, etc/smilies, and etc/sounds. Is this okay, or should it all
be under etc/gnus?
thanks,
mike
