`comint.el' revision: 1.19.
`inhibit-field-text-motion' is defined to be user option, and it is
reasonable. On request will describe cases when actually need to
change behavior controlled by it in comint mode buffers in course of
regular editing. Can not do so safely.
If it is `t', `comint-previous-input', if previous command is C and
current process prompt is P, expect it to create buffer text
PC

without following newline. (Point shown as `^'.) So that C may be
edited and sent. Instead, the following appears.

If execute `comint-send-input' immediately, it sends P as command. So
some parts of xemacs `comint' depend on user option value.

`comint.el' versions since revision 1.14 of 2006/05/25 02:49:47 -0
unconditionally add `TERM=dumb' to environment of all processes they
start. Programs using readline, including bash 3.1 with their bundled
readline libraries, with this setting incorrectly truncate long input
lines. This may be reproduced with inserting long enough command in
comint mode buffer and calling `comint-send-input'. For `echo' with
single argument, string of 256 `.'s as arg bash process outputs part
of them, and for the rest of them outputs
bash: ................: command not found
This does not even depend on what libraries were linked to readline.
They may be from `libncurses5-5.3-1.20040125.4mdk' or
`libtermcap2-2.0.8-35mdk' packages, it is always the same.
With `TERM=emacs' (set manually) these programs would behave in comint
buffers normally, process commands of arbitrary length. This is how
`comint.el' would set it before revision 1.13. It avoided hitting
this bug.

"Spew of old posts": explanation and apology

Several rather old posts are passing through the mailing lists about
now. The cause is understood; they got spam-trapped and had to be
manually released.
Due to day job, I've not been very regular about checking the spam
traps. My apologies for the delays. The main issue is HTML text.
Please be aware that the "No HTML" policy on discussion lists (the
patch lists are exempt) will not change. Any HTML at all will get
your post held as probable spam. I've already moved the HTML check to
the end of the queue, and even after culling all the stuff that's
obviously spam for other reasons, 80% of mail containing HTML is still
spam!
We'll try to be more timely about moderation, but moderation of HTML
posts continues to be a necessary compromise.

Where does "Adobe Garamond Pro" come from? I certainly don't set
anything with a variable width in my init files or in my xrdb
initialization file, and there's no string "Adobe Garamond Pro" in any
XEmacs source file, and I don't have "Adobe Garamond Pro" set in my
GNOME font settings, although I do have it installed (as a TrueType
font) on my system. (Phew!)
Can anyone explain or point me to an explanation?

[Bug: 21.4.18] etags.el add-to-tag-completion-table includes skip bug

The emacs.el file shipped with xemacs up to and including 2.4.19 has, at
the bottom of add-to-tag-completion-table, the following while loop:
(while (looking-at tags-include-pattern)
(goto-char (match-end 0))
(setq filename (file-name-sans-versions (match-string 1)))
(forward-line 1))
This, unfortunately, is buggy -- (goto-char (match-end 0)) takes the
insertion point to the form feed preceding the next include line, and
the following (forward-line 1) then places the point over the first
character of the include line itself; this causes the while loop
condition (looking-at tags-include-pattern) to fail on the next
iteration, as the point is no longer on the form feed. This causes TAGS
file parsing to fail with 'Bad TAGS file.' Removing (forward-line 1)
causes TAGS files containing multiple includes to parse properly on my
system, as below:

AGAIN: problem with starttls for gmail in the official mail-lib 1.76

My success report some days ago has been premature.
Using smtpmail as shipped with the most recent mail-lib (1.76) does
not work for gmail!!!!
I attach below some part of the lossage and the result of the bug
trace (debug-on-error t).
What does work for me is some old version of smtpmail (I don't
remember from which mail-lib version). The only problem there was that
_after_ sending xemacs got stuck and I had to use *C-g*. After adding
the lines
(catch 'done
(while response-continue
[snip]
That version of smtpmail works!!! That's why I consider this not as a
problem of smtpmail, but of the xemacs version of it.
I do remember to have seen similar mail on that topic (that is
smtpmail does not work with gmail) a couple of weeks ago, therefore I
think it is of general interest.
There are 2 possibilities.
- My setting is not correct
- There is a real bug. So could somebody who is responsible of
mail-lib, check whether on can send with gmail?

Status of ruby-modes

Hi,
I just noticed that the files distributed in the ruby-modes package are
out of date with respect to the files distributed with ruby itself (e.g.
there are many changes to ruby-mode.el itself, and ruby-electric.el is not
included in the package). I also noticed that the last release of the
ruby-modes package was in 2003.
How can this package be updated? Should someone be prodded? I'm a bit
afraid that people will suddenly point to me while yelling "volunteer!".
If that happens it would be useful to know what the next steps would be.
Not that I'm volunteering. :-)

Crash while cleaning up an exiting process in 21.5.

On my Mac the following function causes 21.5 HEAD to crash out with a Fatal
Error 13.

To reproduce the problem start xemacs with:
$ xemacs -vanilla -l crasher.el etc/PROBLEMS
and then run M-x die-die-die PROBLEMS.
The key points are that the program being launched is exiting without having
read all the input we're trying to send it and the input has to be relatively
large.
Looking at the stack trace it looks like the stream is trying to flush data
down the now dead pipe at part of closing the pipe.
This problem doesn't occur with 21.4.

I can reproduce this on Linux.
It appears to result from running "gnuclient -nw" from the same shell
that I started XEmacs in. If I run "gnuclient -nw" from a different
shell, things work normally. Want me to file a formal bug report (M-x
report-xemacs-bug)?
