Dog-slow, though. Tangentally, has anyone got experience running XEmacs under valgrind? One would need to do the temacs -batch -l ../lisp/loadup.el run-temacs thing, I imagine, but it might help. (Am on NetBSD for my dev machine, which doesn’t support it, unhappily.) -- When I was in the scouts, the leader told me to pitch a tent. Please reply to posts on the list, so that people with the same problem, or interested in improving XEmacs as a program or in the documentation, can see what's being discussed. Since you are using Cygwin, you probably want to use the Cygwin setup program to get them, instead of downloading by hand. Unless you are extremely short on space, get them all. Some packages require others to work properly (or at all), but this knowledge is not properly embedded yet---you just have to try and hope nothing breaks. Getting all of them avoids this problem. Then when you have a few minutes to experiment, you can delete one or two that you don't think you need---if you're wrong, it's easy to fix. Another possibility is that XEmacs 21.4.20 was released about a week ago, and you might want to upgrade to the new Cygwin version at the same time. Mailing list archives: what next? 17 years, 11 months

I've now restored XEmacs Beta archives back to January 2004. My priorities from here are XEmacs Patches archives for 2006 and 2005, then XEmacs Review for 2006 and 2005, then all of XEmacs CVS logs, then the miscellaneous archives and past volumes. I'm hoping things will go faster as the spam filter (yes, a fair amount of that stuff got into the archives, and now is a great time to get rid of it) stops throwing false positives. I'll be working on indexing/search capability as I go along; no ETA for that yet. Anyway, those are *my* priorities; if yours differ, now would be a good time to speak up! Using easymenu for a global menu, possible? 17 years, 11 months

The XEmacs Package Smoketest

Hi, I have been experimenting with using easymenu for a global menu. I don't know if that is the right term but it is a menu that is always there in the same way as "File", "Edit" etc. Since I want the code to work in both Emacsen I though easymenu would be my best bet. A sample code could be: (require 'easymenu) (defconst my-menu (list "My-Menu" '["Do something" (message "done") t])) (easy-menu-define my-menu nil nil my-menu) (easy-menu-add my-menu) Now this do introduce a menu, "My-Menu", in the current-menubar, but that is it. It is only in the current-menubar. How do I make it stick when I change buffer? Should some hook be used that introduce the menu everywhere? As an addition to the menubar menu a pop-up menu, "My-Menu", is defined. This is not what I want since it interferes with, changes, the standard popup menu for modes. I want a menubar only menu. So is it possible to use easymenu for this or need I go to the native menu systems for each Emacsen to do it? It's not clear what the problem is. Please explain step by step what you did, what you expected to happen at each step, and what actually did happen. Also, it's important to know what version and configuration of XEmacs you are using. By typing M-x report-xemacs-bug RETURN you will get a mail buffer with lots of information that helps us to diagnose problems. If your XEmacs is able to send mail, you can type C-c C-c to send the message, or if not, save the buffer to a file and attach it to your mail using your usual mail client. I believe that is true. There are some very old comments about magic free hooks, but IIRC the code that used them is also inside the comment.... There was a long-standing bug in "large string allocation", where the cons counter didn't get bumped properly for large strings. It was possible to do something like `(while t (make-string 1000000 ?A))' and crash XEmacs in short order. Martin Buchholz submitted a patch for that, which I applied based on my limited understanding that it was correct and the strength of Martin's reputation for finickiness. > (if so, damn, I'll have to actually do some *work* to diagnose this > rather than leaping directly to the solution by magic. :) ) Looking at the large strings first is insider information, not magic, but it might save you some work. However, the bug was not that they never get collected---if something else triggered a GC they got collected.
