[Bug: 21.5-b27] xemacs loses buffered keystrokes over ssh
17 years, 10 months
Ed Avis
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
xemacs seems to lose buffered keystrokes. That is, on a slow machine,
if I type quickly, then keystrokes disappear if xemacs hasn't had time
to process them. For example in typing this bug report, I typed the
word 'local' but it appeared as 'loal' because the C keystroke was
lost. If I type slowly, and wait for one character to be displayed
before typing the next, then I don't see this behaviour.
I am running xemacs in text mode over ssh. I don't see this problem
with xemacs running locally, nor with any other program run over ssh.
I am quite sure it isn't my keyboard, or my bad typing skills ;-p.
If I select some text with the mouse in a different xterm, and paste
it into the xterm where xemacs is running, only the first character of
the text is pasted and the rest is lost. Again, this only happens
with xemacs over ssh, not with other programs running over ssh.
The system info below relates to the remote system where xemacs is
running. The local system I'm sshing from is a fairly vanilla Fedora
Linux 6 running X and xterm.

while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->

Hmm. How does the discrepancy between what M-: (garbage-collect) RET returns
and the virtual memory allocated according to the OS, look on your build?
I’m building with your patch and will experiment further tomorrow, but the
two did diverge notably for me.

Good!

[Bug: 21.5-b25] top level menu font and optionaly modeline font ... etc
17 years, 11 months
Paul Durao
[Bug: 21.5-b25] top level menu font and modeline font
--text follows this line--
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
how do I set the font to the top level menubar
cannot figure how to overwride not even after looking at editres....
there are other issues like setting modeline font and whtever other
internal wifgets xemacs usesv ... but this could be lack of knowledge
there are packages to set colors etc ...
how to basacly customize font size for the app ... toplevel menu
... buttons etc independent from the font which is used for text
editing...
used to be possible to even change the color of the top level menu
...
i think not beeing able to change the top lenvel menu font may be a
bug
sorry if its just ignorance
changing fonts in xemacs is not trivial or customizing color is not
trivial
would apreciate some pointers
tryed things like Emacs*XlwMenu.font:
-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--8-80-75-75
-p-50-iso8859-4
or
XEmacs*XlwMenu.font: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--8-80-75-75
-p-50-iso8859-4
in .Xresources
edit res returns a number for menu font
ps i lost my custom ,emacs files but i used to be a xwindows programmer

Warning:
Defaulting to the GNU Emacs-derived `sendmail.el' mail client. This
facility,
while part of base XEmacs, is heinously underfeatured, and not going to
get
better in the medium term. We include it so that bug reports work without
packages; we suggest that you choose and/or install one of the other mail
clients from packages if you're doing something other than M-x
report-xemacs-bug , or even if you are reporting bugs regularly.
To choose a package from those installed, click on "Options" ->
"Internet" -> "Compose Mail With ..." and decide on one from the
list. Gnus and VM are full-featured and have active user communities.
To disable this warning and stick with the old behavior, you can
explicitly
initialize `mail-user-agent' to 'sendmail-user-agent .

can not config.status --r
17 years, 11 months
Ilya N. Golubev
Your change of 2006-10-30 of `configure' committed on 2006/11/16
11:22:26 +0 makes executing `config.status --r' always fail, at least
if some arguments were passed to `configure' that created it. After
that change `configure' contains the following command text.
exec $SHELL "$0"$ac_configure_args \$ac_configure_extra_args --no-create --no-recursion
It is put in `config.status' created by it and executed when `--r'
passed to `config.status'. This attempts to execute nonexistent
`configure$1' file (with `$1' from `configure' arguments) and fails.
Reproducing the broken `configure' contents with re- running autoconf
2.60.
Please fix.

Ok. Wouldn't hurt to include ia64 in the changelog entry and the code
comments as well :)

In case it's of use to someone, the other ia64 specific change in the Red Hat
originated package is discussed here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/106744
...and the attached crude patch is applied in ia64 builds (only).

FYI: tighter spam filters
17 years, 11 months
Stephen J. Turnbull
I've tighted up the spam filters to deal with the spam-in-an-image spams;
we get about 2 dozen per day, and we've only had one false positive in
five months since I started moderating them.
Here is the new "instant-death" filter:
A message which is of MIME type "multipart/alternative" or
"multipart/related", containing both a "text/html" type part
and an "image/*" type part.
While I suspect it's not quite MIME-kosher, you can use a
"multipart/mixed" body with "text/html" and "image/*" if you really
need to. You'll still probably be delayed by one of the anti-HTML
filters, but the message won't be discarded. Avoiding any HTML in
your posts is still the best policy.
Here is a somewhat laxer criterion which will result in a post being
held:
A message which is of MIME type "multipart/alternative"
or "multipart/related", containing an "image/*" type part.
For more information about XEmacs mailing list policies, please see
http://www.xemacs.org/Lists (or one of the mirrors).
Yes, this content really ought to be moved to lists.xemacs.org (with
an HTTP redirect from the URL above), but it's currently non-trivial
because we share the Mailman installation with other virtual hosts.
I'm working on it, but advice from experienced Apache and Mailman
admins would be gratefully accepted.

Which branch contains fixes to beta build?
17 years, 11 months
Asfand Yar Qazi
Hi,
I want to have more up-to-date code than the most recent beta snapshot
of XEmacs (released May of 2006 - quite old!) However, I don't want
the bleeding-edge code, something a bit less bug-prone, if it exists.
Which branch of CVS should I check out to get the fixes made since the
snapshot was released?
Thanks

Bug with viewing menus
17 years, 11 months
Asfand Yar Qazi
Hi,
I'm using 21.5.27
I Held the mouse down on the menu item "Options", then dragged through
the menu items "Advanced" -> "Emacs" -> "Emacs"
Then I drag the mouse down rather fast down the options list. Emacs
crashes, giving the output below. NOTE that it does not work every
time - only sometimes. I think you have to specifically have the
mouse pointer end up on a certain menu item for it to crash -
hopefully the stack traces below will tell you want happened (if you
want the core file, please feel free to contact me). Also, when I
manage to reproduce this bug, sometimes the lisp backtrace is
different
Thanks

Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.
Your version of XEmacs was distributed with a PROBLEMS file that may describe
your crash, and with luck a workaround. Please check it first, but do report
the crash anyway.
Please report this bug by invoking M-x report-emacs-bug, or by selecting
`Send Bug Report' from the Help menu. If that won't work, send ordinary
email to `xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org'. *MAKE SURE* to include this entire
output from this crash, especially including the Lisp backtrace, as well as
the XEmacs configuration from M-x describe-installation (or equivalently,
the file `Installation' in the top of the build tree).
*Please* try *hard* to obtain a C stack backtrace; without it, we are unlikely
to be able to analyze the problem. Locate the core file produced as a result
of this crash (often called `core' or `core.<process-id>', and located in
the directory in which you started XEmacs or your home directory), and type
gdb /home/ayqazi/bin/xemacs core
then type `where' at the debugger prompt. No GDB on your system? You may
have DBX, or XDB, or SDB. (Ask your system administrator if you need help.)
If no core file was produced, enable them (often with `ulimit -c unlimited')
in case of future recurrance of the crash.
