xemacs freezes

I am running MacOS 10.2.6 and have installed XEmacs 21.4 (patch 9)
using the fink package manager. I use Apple's X11, version 3. XEmacs
crashes immediately if I click on the toolbar. The following error
messages appear:

What could be causing this? XEmacs works for most people with a
similar configuration. I have tried many things, including
re-installing X11 and removing /usr/local. However, I do not want to
wipe my HD and re-install everything from scratch.

I think this depends on the default behaviour of 'make' under those conditions. If you configure with --quick-build and then type 'make', does it do a full build?
I configured XEmacs with --quick-build and the generated Makefile still has 'all' as the first target. So assuming that 'make' when configured for quick-build will do a quick build, there should be no problem with making 'test' depend on 'all'.

I am using the following version built on my computer:
Build dir: D:\emacs\xemacs-21.5.14
Install dir: D:\GNU\xemacs
XEmacs 21.5 (beta14) "cassava" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Tue Jun 03
2003 on WOLFDEI
I get the following error in the console window and the toolbar etc...
are incomplete. I have all the directories in the install folder though.
WARNING:
Couldn't find an obvious default for the root of the
XEmacs hierarchy.

Perhaps some directories don't exist, or the XEmacs executable,
d:\GNU\xemacs\i586-pc-win32\xemacs.exe
is in a strange place?

Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.

Dear Bug Team!
I have a textfile with a large number of columns (about 70000) and I
noticed that the horizontal scrollbar stops working at about column
32700. It does not wrap around but stop moving the buffers position,
the scrollbar can move further but nothing happens in the buffer.
It is possible to move the cursor further by arrow-keys, Ctrl-E and
such.
Maybe some column-counter is a signed 16-bit integer.
I would prefer if I were able to move to all columns by using the
scrollbar.

I will release new SUMOs after I've officially released the current
batch of pre-released packages. But I'm not really sure when this will
happen, sorry. I'd like to see the package smoketest succeed before
