I know that c.e.x would be a better forum for this, but my INN has
gone belly up. :-(
The error: "Variable binding depth exceeds max-specpdl-size" is giving
me grief with one of my projects.
What does it mean?
What causes it?
How can I debug it?
What on earth is "specpdl" an abbreviation of? It certainly isn't a
word in any language I know.

When I use XEmacs 21.4.14 on my Mac, both the shell and gdb modes show
ctrl-M's after each output line in the buffer. I can use M-x
comint-strip-ctrl-m to remove these ctrl-M's, but on every subsequent
output they come back. How can I make this stripping permanent in these
buffers?

Dear Bug Team!
I just upgraded from xemacs 24.4 patch 12 to patch 14, and now when I
compile java code (I use jdee, if that matters), the compilation
message parser dies with:
(1) (error/warning) Error in process sentinel: (error Stack overflow in regexp matcher)
I have tried using ulimit -s 65535 before invoking xemacs (the default
value was 8192), but this does not help. This seems like a regression,
since it works fine with patch 12.

Ok, stupid question time. How do I find out which library a bin is
loading? I used to do programming HP-UX and we used chatr but cygwin
does not seem to have a chatr.
Also, can you just do me a favor and use the sample.init.el and fire up
XEmacs?

FWIW, I also have XP Pro on a P4, and I'm not seeing this problem. Can
you see which XPM DLL XEmacs thinks it is loading? (Just in case you
picked up a buggy XPM DLL from somewhere.)

can't tell if it's XP or the P4. I'd like to find a way to debug this,
but the reboot makes it unlikely. The system I'm using is < 90days old
so it's pretty pristine, I do have LiteStep and WindowBlinds installed
but I disabled these (not uninstalled) and the problem still occurred.

[Bug: 21.4.13] running a shell causes screen to malfunction

Dear Bug Team!
A few weeks back I decided to upgrade xemacs. After the upgrade I was
no longer able to run a shell from xemacs because when I do the screen
goes haywire. (The command prompt is not visible other than a reverse
video view of where it is, no characters are visible when I type them
and the screen mostly doesn't refresh after being iconified and
restored....) The behavior is the same for running shells, trying to
compile, or validate an XML file. I'm running xemacs with cygwin.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything (a couple times)
with no luck. Any suggestions?

I reported this bug yesterday and I believe I have narrowed it down a
bit more.
The problem appears to be with the xpm code. If I comment out the
following code:

System: XEmacs 21.4.13 Rational FORTRAN on Windows 95
Conditions: Assume variables backup-by-copying and version-control are
both the standard value nil.
According to the manual expected behavior of backup-by-renaming is
that XEmacs should rename the original file so that it becomes a
backup file, and then write the buffer being saved into a new file.
As I understand it if I am editing a file, say <test.txt>, by executing
save-buffer on the first draft I should get a file on disk called
<test.txt>. If I kill the buffer, revisit the file <test.txt>, edit,
and save-buffer I expect to have two files on disk; one named
<test.txt~> and the other <test.txt> which contain the first and
second drafts respectively. Furthermore, it I think it is reasonable
to expect that the contents of the file <test.txt> be identical to the
contents of my buffer which is also called <test.txt>.
What actually occurs after the second save is that there is only one
file on disk named <test.txt~> which contains the second draft and
contents of the current buffer which is named <test.txt>. To be clear,
there is no file <test.txt> on disk although my buffer is still named
<test.txt> and saving the buffer shows a message in the echo area
tells me it is saving the file to <test.txt>.
