Hello,
Last week, I finally started rewriting Liece. And now it basically
works. Although it lacks many features in Liece, it has multi-server
connectivity, cleaner module dependencies, extensive add-on mechanism,
and no dependencies on other libraries such as APEL.
I've just created the XEmacs package:

(As you see, the project name is "Riece" :-)
If you like it, I think I'll abandon `liece' package and add `riece'
package instead.

I imagine the right way would be the way you configured; the same
way that happens when you do 'make all'. Of course if xemacs is
already up to date it will not be rebuilt, so if you wanted to
build it in some way different to your ./configure options you
could do that first before 'make check' (as now).
If you think that things should not be built in order to run the
test suite then fair enough, but perhaps in that case the test
suite should not be invoked using 'make', since when using 'make'
the expectation is that all prerequisites will be made
automatically before going on to make the target.

Dear Bug Team!
This is a bug report about building XEmacs, not running it.
I downloaded xemacs-21.4.14.tar.bz2, unpacked it and did
% ./configure --prefix=$HOME
Then I tried to build with:
% make -j -l 1
Producing `src/Emacs.ad.h' from `etc/Emacs.ad'.
Resetting `src/sheap-adjust.h'.

Something is trying to run src/xemacs, but that target has not yet
been built. The Makefile should state the dependency so that
src/xemacs can be built or rebuilt before it is needed. Otherwise,
the Makefile works only by accident in that targets happen to be built
in the right order, although make is not given instructions to do so.
So a single-job build happens to work, but the build breaks with
parallelization (as above).
Anything in the build system which needs src/xemacs should have a
dependency on that file so things can be built in the correct order.

I think this is a little too strict: given that parallel makes
don't work at all at present, any improvement would be
worthwhile. The important thing is not to break the existing
build. So a patch which makes say 50% of build orderings work
rather than say 30% at present (figures plucked from the air)
would be worth applying.
I may send such patches - next time I build xemacs and get a
failure due to a missing dependency I will add it.

This is a bug report about building XEmacs, not about using it once
built.
The 'check' target wants to run './xemacs', but does not correctly
specify a dependency on that file. The Makefile ought to list the
prerequisites for 'make check' so that they will be built or rebuilt
as necessary.

I am facing a problem with Xemacs under Win2K.
I can't properly indent an SGML/XML file under Win2K, while it work very
nicely under Linux ;-)
Here is a very simple stand-alone XML file:
