[Bug: 21.4.13] Xemacs Crashing XP

Dear Bug Team!
I've tried this under both the Native and cygwin install and it's the
same on both.
Windows XP (not sure why it says 2000 below) on a P4.
I'm trying to use the sample.init.el provided from help.
Setting sample.init.el to be my init.el and firing up a new XEmacs
causes my system to crash while loading init.el, like someone hit the
reset button. I narrowed it down to loading up crypt which I
commented out, below:

this allowed XEmacs to start up and let me start working. I then
started to submit a bug on this problem (with init.el loaded and crypt
stuff commented out). I typed in the subject of the bug into the
minibuffer and hit return and my system crashed again as before.
Any suggestions on how to debug this issue?

Fully agreed. The name `mule-fonts' also suggest that it has something
to do with Mule, and not with the type of the initialized devices (doing
so looks like a design bug to me).

Hm, every package has to start with thousands of `fboundp's...? Surely
not. Packages assume that the supported Emacs flavors/versions support
a basic set of objects.

The XEmacs Mule docs were very Spartanic some years ago, so I relied of
what I was told / read of how to add fonts to a given face on a XEmacs
with Mule support.
You can google them ("mule-fonts" xemacs) and find a lot, e.g.

None of these mails says something that the `mule-fonts' tag has

[Bug: 21.4.12] Cut-n-paste to other applications broken under Gnome/X

XEmacs does not transfer the latest copied text to the Gnome/X/Sawfish
desktop clipboard. GNU Emacs seems to have exactly the same problem.
I notice this most often when I try to cut and paste code samples into
email (I use Ximian Evolution 1.2.4).
To reproduce:
- Open Ximian Evolution 1.2.4 and create a new mail message.
- Open XEmacs (or GNU Emacs)
- Copy/kill some text into the kill ring
- Switch back to your new mail message in Ximian and try to paste:
Nothing happens.
The same thing happens when I try to paste to gedit. I am using
RedHat9. I can paste from other applications to emacs fine. I would
be really surprised if no-one else had reported this bug.
How do I expect it to work? The last thing I cut/copied to my kill
ring should be transferred to the desktop clipboard when emacs looses
it's focus (when I switch to another application). Even if you could
implement this for text-only, that would be great.
I have other projects I'm working on now and my C skills are
rusty, but I could work on fixing this if no-one else is. Just let me
know.

Exporting XEmacs selections as HTML

Reading <http://www.jwz.org/doc/x-cut-and-paste.html> inspired me to
think about integrating `htmlize' with the primary selections XEmacs
exports to other applications. Jamie says:
But when pasting [the primary selection] into a word processor,
you'd want to keep the font information: if both applications
spoke HTML, they could use that as the intermediate format by
which they transferred the data.
Jamie, have you seen `htmlize'? It's at
http://fly.srk.fer.hr/~hniksic/emacs/htmlize.el, and it allows easy
conversion of buffer contents to HTML. Sort of like
`ps-print-buffer-with-faces', but with HTML output.
What I'd like to do is have XEmacs call htmlize code when exporting
primary selection to applications that can handle HTML. Your article
implies that the XEmacs selection mechanism is powerful enough to
negotiate content types with the recipients.
The content negotiation mechansim is very powerful, and I wish
more applications would take advantage of it.
For examples of how to use it, see the files select.el and/or
x-select.el from any XEmacs distribution. There are some utility
functions in there that will let you experiment with content
negotiation with other apps, see what types the apps are capable
of converting to, etc. For example:
(x-get-selection-internal 'PRIMARY 'TARGETS)
==> [TARGETS TIMESTAMP TEXT STRING LENGTH FILE_NAME OWNER_OS

On my XEmacs 21.4.13, `x-get-selection-internal' doesn't exist and
`get-selection-internal' seems to always returns nil, regardless of
the application that owns the primary selection.
Looking at select.el doesn't provide many clue how to export HTML. It
does deal with selection "types", but I don't see anything resembling
a MIME-like content-type that I could check for html. select-x.c is
similarly unhelpful. The only place in XEmacs that handles MIME-like
content types is the (broken) drag-n-drop code.

Oh, now this is annoying. GDB (both version 5 and 6) cannot read the
backtrace from the core file. Hmmmm, interactive use is also hosed.
GDB can't show a stack trace even in a running XEmacs. It can't find
local variables either.
Actually, that is not terribly surprising. But icc comes with a
debugger, idb, and here is what it has to say about the core file:

With interactive use, idb is able to successfully show me the last 5 or
6 stack frames, but gets lost beyond that. It can't find the local
variables either. Off to check out the icc errata, then...
At any rate, this shows that the Gnus-induced "freed lrecord" bug is not

progmodes 1.89 not found in prerelease

When I select package update from the US prerelease repository, I shows that
I have progmodes 1.88 installed but that 1.89 is available. However, when I
select that package to update. The return says it cannot be found. This
behavior began a few days ago and up until recently also affected
text-modes. Other packages come through fine. Here is the output from the
