While proceeding with the psgml sync to upstream, I noticed that our version has some kind of tempo stuff in psgml-edit.el, basically just changed `insert' to `tempo-process-and-insert-string'. The upstream version doesn't have any tempo support. Does anybody know whether this is needed? I'd like to minimize the diffs to upstream unless there's a good reason to do stuff otherwise. `tempo-insert-string-functions' is not set anywhere in psgml so `insert' and `tempo-process-and-insert-string' are roughly equivalent there. I already asked Jerry J (his name was in the relevant ChangeLog entry) but he couldn't remember the details. -- \/ille Skyttä scop at xemacs.org

100% CPU use after X11 disconnect 21 years, 10 months

Dear Bug Team! I've been having problems with dead xemacs processes taking up 100% of the CPU. Most of my users have Windows workstations and use xemacs over an ssh tunnel. If the Windows ssh program dies abruptly (a machine crash, for example), the xemacs process stays around and continues to eat up CPU time. I would expect xemacs to die when the user gets disconnected. The stack trace is below. Can you please look into this? why does M-w (kill-ring-save) hurt so bad? 21 years, 10 months

Running "xemacs -q" (21.4p8) via remote ssh, over a pair of T1s. Every time I type "M-w" to copy something to the kill ring, xemacs stalls for 1 - 3 seconds. No kidding. I tried (setq debug-on-quit t) and quickly typing M-w C-g and all I get is: Signaling: (quit) kill-new("16-Nov-2002 (sat); 11:36 PM\n") copy-region-as-kill(13756 13784) kill-ring-save(13756 13784) call-interactively(kill-ring-save) Of course that shows up 1 - 3 seconds later; so I don't know if that means that kill-new has gone insane, or if the slow part happens before there, but non-interruptably. Right now I'm seeing C-k and M-DEL exhibiting similar lossage, but I don't think they always do -- or perhaps they always do, and I'm misremembering. At first this made me suspect that "copy the emacs kill to the X clipboard" was on, but it doesn't appear to be. But this does smell like "kill causes excessive X traffic." I have not run an X sniffer, mostly because I've forgotten how. xemacs-21.4.8-16 RPM, Red Hat 8.0. Stack overflow in regexp matcher 21 years, 10 months

Dear Bug Team! Using XEmacs on a LaTeX document, with AucTeX and RefTeX, i get the error "Stack overflow in regexp matcher" when pressing C-c =, for showing the table of contents. The LaTeX file is (relatively) large, >5700 lines, 250kB. The ToC would contain 200 entries. Is there already a solution known? There are some occurrences of this error in the web, but the only advise I found was "upgrade". It works in GNU Emacs without any problems. The error sounds to me like the " Fix: (Cygwin) Regex crashes; increase stack size (Andy Piper)" of <http://www.xemacs.org/Releases/21.4.10.html>. I posted the same text to comp.emacs.xemac, ID news://aunp05$43g$03$1＠news.t-online.com, but there was no solution. Thanks a lot! --pkgdir and --package-path 21 years, 10 months

Hmm, while looking at the newest RH Rawhide XEmacs RPM, I noticed that they had tried to use --pkgdir (and failed). AFAICT, that's not used, and can be safely removed since lispdir gets set to the same value in configure and thus it's mkdir'd anyway in Makefile (mkdir). I'll send a patch against 21.5 and 21.4 if this is correct. Another thing that needs clarification is --package-path. configure.usage says: ... PATH splits into three parts separated by double colons (::)... AFAICT, the splitting is done in src/fns.c (split_external_path), and it uses SEPCHAR for splitting. I suspect configure.usage needs tweaking; if I'm right, on Unix (maybe Cygwin) the path is split on *single* colons and on Windows, semicolons. -- \/ille Skyttä scop at xemacs.org
