I'm not sure whether this is a repeated post (although I doubt that anyone would be as much a linux idiot as me) but I've tried searching for a similar thread on the website but couldn't find one. anyway, here's the problem i'm facing. I am trying to install xemacs onto my machine (which is running on Windows ME) using cygwin. i followed the instructions so far and by and large, there has been no problems. However, I was unable to configure the system/file. i typed this in the xemacs-21.1.14 dir using cygwin (B20): ./configure --with-xll --with-gcc --with-menubars=lucid --with-scrollbars=lucid --with-sound=native or ./configure --with-xll --with-gcc --with-menubars=lucid --with-scrollbars=lucid --with-sound=native;make Neither of them worked. May I know what is wrong here? eric

A properly configured X windows should be detected automatically, etc. cygwin B20 is horribly obsolete. I doubt if anybody has tried this before. I suggest upgrading.

My problem with *Help* and *Completion* buffers not popping forward has been resolved. Once again it was because of some Hyperbole-related code. I had this (including the comment) enabled in one of my several byte-compiled startup files. ;; I don't know why this is needed - defined in hmouse-drv.el (defun hkey-help-show (x &optional y) t) I vaguely remember adding that three or four years ago, as a stub of some sort to get by some other kind of annoyance. When I commented out the defun this afternoon, my problem went away, and as far as I know, everything else still works, so close the books on this bug. If there are any subscribers to the bug team who still make use of Hyperbole (the last free version), I'd like to hear from you offlist. I have some questions. -- Lynn David Newton Phoenix, AZ

Adrian said it was okay to send this through this list. Apologies to those who would rather not get JPEG file attachments. I've been updating packages and tweaking things. Suddenly I've discovered that "*Completions*" and "*Help*" buffers are being created and filled, but are not popping to the front. Some examples: o M-x describe-bindings creates the *Help* buffer, but appears not to, i.e., there is no apparent response. I have to run electric-buffer-list or list-buffers to see the *Help* buffer and select it. o Tab completion does not work as we like it. For instance, in my home directory I have several files named ".gn*": $ ls -d .gn* .gnome .gnome-desktop .gnome-help-browser .gnome_private .gnupg .gnus However, if I type in "ls -d .gn<Tab>" instead of the list of completions, I just get this following <Tab> [ATTACHMENT ~/gfx/i/2002_03_05_114839_shot.jpg, image/jpeg] Notice the "Press space to flush", verifying that the completion was done. When I look at the buffers, I find this: [ATTACHMENT ~/gfx/i/2002_03_05_114901_shot.jpg, image/jpeg] Note that the fact that it doesn't pop up Help buffers indicates it doesn't have anything to do with the Unix shell. (Adrian suggested offhand there might be a connection.) Is there some sort of variable I might have hosed that causes that *not* to pop forward when it's created? It's really annoying. Well, tux is taking its good ol' time about sucking up the tarballs. But you can check out with the r21-5-latest-beta or r21-5-5 tags, or (after an hour or so) get the tarball(s) out of ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/beta/xemacs-21.5/tmp Official announcement tomorrow, my time. Note that in the not too distant future Ben will be merging his mule workspace into the main line. JDE: generated projects not valid Lisp 23 years, 1 month

Hi, nobody responded to my bug report, so I'll apparently have to fix it myself... :-) Testcase: on Windows (the fault won't show on Unix), open a Java file and create new JDE project in the same directory (make sure there are no other project files on the path towards the root - it isn't that they would mask the problem, but they might be destroyed when demonstrating it). Restart XEmacs, open the Java file again (JDE should notice the project file) and run jde-save-project . JDE keeps the prj.el buffer (it should save and close it after updating but doesn't), and the contents of the buffer are wrong. Analysis: in a couple of cases (it's quite possible that I didn't notice all of them), JDE needs to map a pathname to the project file to an (existing) buffer containing the file; it does it by checking the result of buffer-file-name on the items of buffer-list, with string=, *not* against the raw file name, but against a somewhat canonicalized string (in particular, a string having directories separated - even on Windows - by slashes) and naturally can't find the buffer... There should be a function for this task, which handles these irritating details - and apparently there is: get-file-buffer . So, I replaced the ad-hoc check by a call to get-file-buffer (in 2 places, where it seemed "clear" what's going on) and got the testcase to work. Possible follow-up: I wonder what JDE will do with mixed-case pathnames; I tried only all-lowercase... Overall, the Right Way would of course be to document what *exactly* functions (like jde-save-close-buffer) expect as a parameter, but I can't see myself bothering with that sort of thing - the included patch seems good enough...
