I tried to build xemacs 21.1.14 under Linux 8.0 and I am getting the
foolowing error. (there is no core dump). What should I do? HELP!!!!!!

or XDB, or SDB. A similar procedure should work for all of
these. Ask your system administrator if you need more help.)

hmm. strupr and strlwr should be ansi, i think. in any case my gcc builds had no problem.
as for gtk problems, i have to apologize about that, i don't seem to have any way of testing gtk currently. (does anyone know if gtk works under cygwin?) also, i have received no response at all from bill perry concerning my complaints about duplicated gtk code. if we could abstract out the duplication, many of these problems would disappear.
the problem with passing union-type bugs on to the gcc developers is that they simply result in crashes in random places in the code. often the precise point of the crash changes from build to build even with no code changes and identical build options, and the builds will sometimes randomly work and sometimes not. it would be a real effort to figure out what's compiling wrong. (at one point, however, circa 19.13, i did track down the problem, which was that structure initializations were not happening exactly in parallel, so if you had something like x = foo (x), where x was a union, some fields of the union got assigned before all were being used. i did write to the gcc developers and got an incredibly defensive response -- basically, they quoted chapter and verse from the ansi standard and said "well, we agree that the behavior you are expecting is reasonable but technically it doesn't *absolutely* say in the standard that it has to be done that way, so you shouldn't really expect this to work." in general all my interactions with gcc developers have been bad and most of them have been real assholes.)

yes, i definitely have discovered compiler problems in the past. there's another message in which i wrote about this yesterday, i think. when expressions got too complicated, gcc failed to do structure assignments completely in parallel. the bugs only occur usually when you turn on error-checking and mule, because these options greatly increase the complexity of the expressions. OCaml may simply not have any code with the expression complexity that we have.

I am probably too late to jump into the discussion, but are you absolutely
sure that it was _compiler_ bug but not the poorly written code whose
behaviour is undefined? Do you have a small example showing such _compiler_
problem? There is a language (OCaml) those datastructures are almost
entirely based on the union type, and I never heard of compiler problems
related to that, although Ocaml can be build with gcc, VC++ and other C
compilers under all major OSes.

what i'm saying is that it's not our duty to debug gcc problems. that's the duty of the gcc developers. *they* should be downloading XEmacs, compiling with union type and the other options that produce a crash, and then figuring out what went wrong. if gcc is too buggy to support use-union-type, then we shouldn't use it. you gain absolutely nothing from using it except the compile-time checks -- thus, i recommend using it periodically as an error-catcher but not to run executables with it.
even if we do spend a lot of time debugging the compiler error and figure out the problem, what do we do then? we can try to work around it, but the work-around will only function until the next gcc release, and then the crash will probably be somewhere else.

Maybe they _should_ be, but they're not in glibc or libc on NetBSD
that I can find. Cygwin libc != glibc or BSD libc. Anyway, that kind

--use-union-type, or are you just saying you don't feel like debugging
