xemacs vs. gnu emacs 22 years

I've been assigned the task of researching the differences between GNU Emacs and Xemacs, in order to convince our sysadmin to install one of them. I've noticed from your stable release FTP site that it's been quite awhile since a stable release became available. Is Xmacs still under development, or have Xemacs and GNU emacs in fact merged? Is there any real advantage to installing Xemacs (rather than the latest version of Emacs?) Thanks. Jessica

A fix for the "freezing" problem ..... 22 years

Hi! I have tested Stephen patch for deadlocks for the last four days. I ran XEmacs through (almost) all packages for mail, debugging, dired etc ... No deadlocks any more !! There is occasional and rare freeze every now and then. Stephen, if you think I could help in elevating those in any known manner, please let me knwo and tell me where to look for the possible causes. But those short periods of "freezes" are quite tolerable. I'm frequently seeing problems when using the above sw to generate latex documents. The problem happens maybe 1 out of 10 times. The problem is, when starting latex to compile the document (C-c C-c Latex RET), nothing happens. Some additional observations: - The output buffer shows: Running `LaTeX' on ..... No other output appears in the buffer - Xemacs is using 100% CPU. - If I try to start another compilaiton with C-c C-c, xemacs notices another compilation is running and asks me if I want to kill it. If I answer 'yes' output buffer shows: LaTeX kill at ... but a new compilation is never started. Starting another compilation _usually_ succeeds, but I may have to try several times - If I try to kill the latex output buffer, C-x k, output buffer shows LaTeX hangup at ... - latex.exe appears to be started but not running (i.e, shows in task list but doesn't use any cpu resources, even if priority is raised) - Trying to kill -9 latex.exe gives: $ /usr/bin/kill -9 1252 kill 1252: Operation not permitted - Trying to kill -f latex.exe succeeds, and output buffer shows: Latex finished at..... I'm aware this may be tricky since the error could be in any of xemacs/cygwin/auctex (note the alpha version) or miktex, but was hoping that at least someone had seen something similar. I've also seen other weird things with xemacs which doesn't use auctex/miktex. I believe that if one of the things required by ecb requires eshell-directory-name, that could cause this symptom. Now, as to why a 'make bindist' in eshell causes the problem to appear, and a 'make distclean' in eshell causes the problem to go away, that I do not understand (yet). Ok, after doing a "make install" in eshell i now get the build-error for ecb too. But for me "make distclean" in eshell causes the problem NOT to go away...very mysterious... Klaus

But currently I'm most intersted how to edit the Makefile (how to deal with HTML_STAGING??) of the new ECB package so that the generated html-files are 1. Installed in xemacs-packages/www/ecb (or xemacs-packages/html/ecb) after calling "make install" 2. Included in the binary dirstib in the same place after calling "make bindist" Can anybody tell me how to do this in the Makefile or change the Makefile in the repository so i can update it??
