.emacs not being loaded in emacs-lisp mode

Hi!
[please CC me, i'm not on the list]
I sadly noticed that my .emacs file was load only in "fundamental" mode
when editing it. Digging through, I noticed that the default .emacs
entry in auto-mode-alist is:
("[/\\][._].*emacs\\'" . emacs-lisp-mode)
I don't understand the first []. Why the need for a / or \ before the
.emacs? Is this setup the default behavior?
Adding the following in my .emacs fixed it:
(setq auto-mode-alist (append auto-mode-alist '(("\\.emacs\\'" .
emacs-lisp-mode))))
It works. Why isn't *that* the default?
The version is: 21.1 (patch 9) "Canyonlands" XEmacs Lucid on Windows NT,
installed from binary.

Hi,
I was using XEmacs 21.4.3.
After the machine is changed from Ultra-1(Sol7) to Ultra-60(Sol7),
it is not possible to use XEmacs21.4.3.
My configure is:
./configure --with-gcc --prefix=/opt/XEmacs21.4 --with-athena=3d --with-scrollbars=athena --with-ncurses --with-xpm --with-jpeg --with-png --with-tiff --with-gif --with-xface --with-tooltalk --with-sparcworks --with-cde --with-pop --external-widget --with-sound=native --with-mule --with-xim=motif --with-canna --with-wnn6 --site-libraries='/usr/dt/lib /usr/openwin/lib /opt/NSUG98/X11R6.4/lib /opt/NSUG98/lib /opt/NSUG98/canna/lib /usr/lib/locale/ja/wnn/lib' --site-includes='/usr/dt/include /usr/openwin/include /usr/lib/locale/ja/wnn/demo/include /opt/NSUG98/canna/include /opt/NSUG98/include /opt/NSUG98/X11R6.4/include ' --with-database=gnudbm --with-ldap --with-purify --with-clash-detection --with-dragndrop

It looks like prin1 crashed while trying to print something -- a
window event? -- that was not a string. I'm not sure exactly how to
cause it. I think I switched out of another program with meta-tab
while dragging the mouse to the lower-left. This was not -vanilla. I
had debug-on-error set to: (void-variable void-function
wrong-number-of-arguments wrong-type-argument args-out-of-range
arith-error)

I've also fixed typing "f" in "Help" buffer (it was saying that
"find-function-at-point not defined").
Now the "f" key is bound to wrapper that calls (require), rebounds "f" to
real find-function-at-point, and calls it.

To who it may concern:
I currently have to use GNU emacs on MacOS X, I would much prefer using
Xemacs instead. Given that Apple will represent the biggest unix vendor in
the world by year-end, what are the plans to port to this version of unix?

Or we should define nifty faces in `help.el' and ask hyper-apropos to reuse
them.
As for the fix -- it was inspired by the code in `help.el'. You can find
"(require 'hyper-apropos)" in `describe-variable' and `describe-function-1'.

No problem. FYI, you can use M-x report-emacs-bug (available from the
Help menu, too) or send directly to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org. I am
cc'ing this message there, so you needn't resend.
It looks to me like you may have a problem in your GCC installation,
where certain compiler helper functions or macros (__builtin_va_alist)
are not getting defined. Beyond that I can't say; I hope the Solaris
users on xemacs-beta will be able to give further help.

I've noticed that EFS says 'Done' long before the result is visible.
That's with an ADSL connection, native 21.4.3 on Win2k. If it
doesn't wait properly, this could explain why the experimental
EFS seems shaky, with both cygwin and windows ftp. Things fail
1st time, try again (when things are cached) and it works.

Info-auto-generate-directory 'if-outdated fails with nonexistent dir

I don't subscribe to this list, so replies meant for me will have to be sent
directly to me...
If you set Info-auto-generate-directory to if-outdated, this is documented
to regenerate the directory when it's outdated or doesn't exist, but in fact
if the file "dir" doesn't exist, the directory is just ignored. Here's a
patch to fix it, relative to 21.1.6, but the exact same code is present in
the current release in the cvs repository. I also note (though I don't have
a patch for it) that if you set Info-auto-generate-directory to always,
because that doesn't cause the Info-dir-newer-info-files variable to be set
up (in Info-dir-outdated-p), it has the effect of behaving like nil for
directories that have existing "dir" files.
