I trace'd all the functions in vc.el and vc-hooks.el for the problem description and placed an HTMLized version on the web: http://www.rose-hulman.edu/~froydnj/vc-trace-output.html replete with headings that hopefully describe the problem. Function calls, returns, and the values returned are color-coded. The file is about 60K, so you might have to wait for it (school's connection is kinda slow). The main problem, as I can see, is that in the second `C-x v v', vc-file-getprop continually returns nil; it's as though pertinent information wasn't saved during vc-register or something similar. The third time through, vc-file-getprop returns the correct information. I'm not sure why initially registering the file doesn't set the information; it appears to get set during the second `C-x v v' in the call to vc-backend (call depth 10). But it's too late; we're already trying to check the file out. In the second call to `C-x v v', the function vc-file-clearprops is called (from vc-backend-admin, call depth 8 and 7, respectively); that looks suspicious, too. The above comments become much clearer after looking at the HTML file. :) The GNU Emacs (20.7) version of vc.el contains the following line in vc-register: (setq vc-buffer-backend (vc-backend (buffer-file-name))) which looks like it might fix some problems, but I don't think adding it last night did anything; I can try again. I have tested it a bit and had to start a new XEmacs to be able to send you this mail :-) The defun trickery inside (eval-when-compile is to blame. Another issue: Is patcher-mail suppose to create a fresh mail/message buffer and fill it in correctly? It doesn't for me when setting patcher-mail-method ot sendmail or message. For sendmail the diff command output is inserted just after the "To:" header. Setting the method to gnus does not work at all with gnus-version "Gnus v5.8.7" Why not use (compose-mail ...) instead? See build-report or pxp. I would definitely like to see patcher.el added to xemacs-devel once these child sicknesses are overcome. windows showstopper re: cannot find entry symbol _WinMainCRTStartup 24 years

I'm trying to compile Cygwin on my latest setup. For me, it hangs in menubar-items.el -- i.e. well before auto-autoloads.el. I attempted to run under GDB and get a seg fault, but the stack is all trashed. HOWEVER, I notice this warning, which looks very bad: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-cygwin/2.95.2-6/../../../../i686-pc-cygwin/bin/ld: warn ing: cannot find entry symbol _WinMainCRTStartup; defaulting to 00401000 I am configuring with ../../$1/configure --verbose --extra-verbose --srcdir=../../$1 \ --site-includes=/usr/local/include --cflags=v \ --site-libraries=/usr/local/lib \ --package-path=/src/xemacs/xemacs-packages --without-database $muleopts i.e. not PDUMP. I definitely did not used to get that warning, a few months ago when I last compiled Cygwin. That warning could well be the source of all these hangings -- if the CRT startup is not properly invoked, all sorts of nasty problems can happen. When did this warning start occurring? When did these hangings start occurring? Did it start occurring to anyone right after they upgraded to a more recent Cygwin? Has anyone been messing around with the way arguments are passed to the loader? Notice that this also has mainCRTStartup in it, as well as WinMainCRTStartup. My strong suspicion is that crt1.o is the correct CRT to be using for a windowed-subsystem XEmacs; crt0.o, with no references to WinMain, has to be for a console-subsystem XEmacs. So, by using the wrong CRT initialization, we could easily be fucking ourselves in all sorts of ways. So once again, what changed to produce this? Andy, Kirill, please comment. Andy, can you investigate, since you know more about Cygwin than I do and you've been more on top of the Cygwin changes? font-lock-after-change function unbearably slow; Ben change? 24 years

Using 21.2.45, latest sumo. Solaris and Win2K. It seems that whenever I load a file, the load process slows down a lot at the point where font-locking is putting up a message about regexps. After perusing the thread mentioned in my subject, I get the feeling this has not been solved. Has it been and I just missed it? thanks -- Matthew O. Why hasn't the patch from this message: http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-nt/200008/msg00004.html been applied yet? It fixes the problem with using gnuclient under cygwin from the windows explorer. Specifically, it fixes the path problems. IE before the patch, I would see it looking for a file name of: //E\htdocs\file3.php which doesn't exist as a path name. However, with this patch, it translates it to /htdocs/file3.php which is correct! Here's the patch again (please note, this is NOT my patch! Anyone having luck with make-frame-on-display "remote:0"? 24 years

I tried disabling (display-time) just in case that was the problem but I still get xemacs: X Error of failed request: BadFont (invalid Font parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 55 (X_CreateGC) Resource id in failed request: 0x6800018 Serial number of failed request: 154 Current serial number in output stream: 159 ( times a bunch - Resource ID and Serial Number both increment by one several times ) make-frame-on-tty works fine ( trying to figure out problems with my gnuclient/gnuserver ) and 21.1.x work fine aside from some crashes in the 14's display code with the cvs gnus. Problems with experimental versions of jde and semantic 24 years

Hi Steve I'm testing your experimental versions of the following packages: jde-1.25-pkg.tar.gz semantic-1.05-pkg.tar.gz eieio-1.01-pkg.tar.gz - seems to work Here a couple of problems with your versions of semantic, and jde: First of all jde-1.25-pkg.tar.gz is missing jde-package.el/elc. If I copy that from the normal jde distribution jde starts up. JDE and JDebug docu are not found through menu. This is because first, JDE docu is missing from your tar.gz file and second, the lisp code is searching for the html files under the wrong directories.
