Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
After a longish session (half a day), XEmacs crashed while Gnus was
ending an access to a foreign newsserver. I was not watching the
screen closely when it happened, so I am unsure this was indeed the
last thing that happened. However I *am* definite the last thing I'd
touched on XEmacs was Gnus.
I have been unable to reproduce this bug, sorry.

More fun with background pixmaps

After learning to set background pixmaps reliably (see my followup to
my own post "Background pixmaps cannot be set more than once"), and
setting these for some buffers, I noticed the following effect which
looks like a bug to me: in a buffer which has a background pixmap set,
long lines which wrap to multiple lines onscreen have the correct
foreground color only on the last visible line - all wrapped lines
(those with the twisted arrow at the end) are shown with a different
color - which is black in my normal XEmacs, and dark gray on one
started with --vanilla. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Okay. I've got some more information.
If I use beta32, which is an interesting data point because it's the first
xemacs that has the progress bar (or at least a visible progress bar in my
environment) it looks like the options.el file is being loaded several
times. However, the time to save the customization file is still pretty
fast. I'm afraid I don't even have the menubar enabled, let alone the
progress bar.
Also, it doesn't seem like the font-lock-after-change-function is getting
called any more now than before. Both weigh in at 7934 calls.
Oh, and font-lock-always-fontify-immediately is definitely nil. I couldn't
imagine having that variable set to t. :-) In fact, I even commented out the
check in font-lock-after-change-function to make sure.
Here's my methodology:

I used the above function to control start/stop of profile. The experiment
entailed going to a customization buffer with lazy-shot, changing something,
and profiling the save of the customization file. Although the profile
includes me hitting "C-c C-f" a couple of times, plus a C-g, they're way in
the noise.

Well, I'm not an xemacs expert, but it looks to this layman that the print
functions don't get along well with extents, for whatever reason. The number
of calls to prin1 and princ (and whatever anonymous compiled function that
called them) in the last two trials were exactly the same, and higher than
in the first two, but the time spent in them was far less, especially in
Trial 4. Hmmm...

GTK: first impressions

Just built the new gtk stuff, and I'm excited. It'll be very nice when
this stuff is fully stable.
I had a few issues that I noticed right off the bat (and some of this
you probably already know):
- I get a lot of "FIXME!!! - marking the hashtable makes us explode"
messages
- Menus seem somewhat unstable. When browsing the Customize menus,
occasionally XEmacs would just tweak out and give up drawing them,
leaving just the item on the menubar highlighted
- Fontification in buffers is totally disabled.
- Selecting text seems broken. I can't mouse-select, although
shift-select works. Text won't go to or from the selection,
clipboard, or cut buffers.
- Note-text in menus doesn't show up, and sometimes gives an extra
separator (ie, the Lisp menu and popup menu in lisp-interaction)
- Dialogs don't work:
Symbol's function definition is void: gtk-make-dialog-box-internal
Other than that, looks very cool. Keep up the good work.

The gtk-xemacs-21-2 branch now builds --with-gtk=yes, and will actually run
under the TTY (all hail the event loop!) The GTK stuff is much less
solid. It will briefly flash up the frame, then explode silently (or with
a silly dialog box if you have GNOME support compiled in).
If people want to check out the X and TTY side of this, to make sure the
lisp integration didn't cause anything to break, I would really appreciate
it.

With XEmacs 21.2.43, the following recipe makes it happen for me every
time:
(1) xemacs --vanilla
(2) Evaluate (setq temp-buffer-shrink-to-fit t)
(3) Visit a Lisp file that, when bytecompiled, will produce warnings.
(4) Select "Byte compile this File" from the Lisp menu.
