Hi John, I am a not a Xemacs pro, so I am not too sure of the intricacies. I was able to build on IRIX 6.5 with out any problems. I just used the default compiler ( cc ) and set the compilation flags to "-n32 -o2 -mips3". Infact, this was the first machine I tried to install as I have been successful in installing most of the GNU tools. with regards, dhruva

xemacs Install problems 24 years, 2 months

I built and installed xemacs on a sparc 60 running Solaris 8. As I understand it, the pre-built kit will install to /usr/local; I don't have permissions to write there so I have to build it to install it elsewhere. I did as the directions said and downloaded the source and the packages, untarred and unzipped them. The only difference is, I was not root and I did a ./configure --prefix=/dir where dir is one directory above where I was installing from. Then I did the make install Then I did a setenv EMACSPACKAGEPATH /the_path/where_the/packages/were/untarred When I run it I get Warning:Cannot convert string <key>Escape,_Key_Cancel to type VirtualBinding and other similar warnings when I run it . The tool bar looks all messed up, the syntax highlighting color does not work properly and many options like paren matching are missing. Do I need more packages or did I neglect t do something? 1) The webmaster(a)xemacs.org is probably not the best address for forwarding this sort of question. You can use the xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org mailing list if you are using a beta version, or the xemacs(a)xemacs.org list if it's a released version. (In general, people ask a lot of questions on the beta list, some of which aren't strictly related to beta XEmacs versions only). 2) I'm the guy who built the last released binary kits of XEmacs for Sparc/Solaris, but that was built on a Solaris 6 machine. I did the build without root privileges, supplying --prefix=/some/scratch/dir and had no problem 3) You haven't told us what version of XEmacs you were trying to build. 4) "Dull grey screen" sounds like just the default grey background (?) You can customize this to your liking - there is lots of info on customization on the xemacs.org website. "Strange looking buttons" might mean you don't have the XPM libraries installed, or they weren't found during the ./configure. "Some unstable behavior" is pretty hard to say anything meaningful about ;-) 5) Have you read README.packages ? Some of your problems sound to me like you haven't installed the Lisp packages. 6) If all else fails, try to install from a prebuilt binary kit. The one I build on Solaris 6 works fine on Solaris 7; I don't have a Solaris 8 machine to try it on. If you felt like testing it out and giving us some feedback that would be great!

GTK is pretty well behaved in terms of sticking to the object system, but GNOME is horrid and requires direct structure access all over the place. *sigh* -Bill P.

Loading up .../src/gtk-xemacs/tests/gtk/gtk-test.el and using M-x gtk-test is a pretty good demo. If you have gnome installed you can also futz around with changing the themes dynamically from theme-selector-capplet. Cheesy, but kind of cool. The killer app will be when/if someone writes a customize interface in real GTK. Kind of like the sawfish UI stuff. Wouldn't be terribly difficult. -Bill P.
