That's what the new dual processor G4s are good for. :) We should optimize
the redisplay calculations with those fancy 128-bit instructions. I agree
that most computers are fast enough to deal with something like this now,
but we should always permit a way to turn it off.

I disagree - there are plenty of instances where I want things to align in
text mode. Granted, I do write most of my documentation on HTML now, but
having nicely aligned tables of figures in email or plain text files can be
very useful. :)

The only way I see to reconciliate our viewpoints on this is to provide a
centralized interface to explicitely (de-)activate installed packages,
something like a Custom page with a checkbox for each package.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

This problem does not seem to be affected by OS version, also it
is present when compiled with gcc 2.95.2 and latest snapshot. I
see this also when I compile without optimisations (-O0). I
don't know which version first has the problem. But version I
currently use 21.1.4 does not die in this assert and outputs
'nil'. There does not seem to be any difference between
'-vanilla' and using my normal .emacs.
I guess this can be tested by others with following patch.

Qdll_filename_encoding symbol missing from emacs.c

I just checked out a new source tree of 21.2 and tried to compile it using
Mingw32 (./configure i586-pc-mingw32). I get this error:

but what makes the current packages any better than the ones that don't
insinuate themselves? lots of those are useful, too. e.g. i personally have no
use whatsoever for ldap, which i'm sure is the same for the majority of users.

Yes. Not *just* proportional fonts, though. It's non-trivial to get
a set of fonts (roman, italic, bold, bold-italic) which are all of the
same width, even if individually they're monospaced. That kind of
thing looks pretty horrible in, for example, the package list screen
(although it does make the differences stand out, I suppose).
It would be really cool not to have to worry, and for most things to
just work. And having proportional fonts usable would be nice, too.

interesting. You got lucky. The GC collected function in
function_argcount but the pointer still pointed to a valid LispObject
(the list in the backtrace). I assume this is _not_ a debug build? In
debug builds we try to make sure that collected objects are really
invalid, to get a crash early on.
I had fixed this by adding a GCPRO (see xemacs-patches) yesterday but
didn't get around to mailing the patch.
