bug with .saves files 25 years

In all recent versions of xemacs v21.1, a file is created called ".saves-<pid>-<hostname>" in my home directory, each time xemacs auto-saves a file. The .saves file contains a list of the files that have been autosaved during the current xemacs session. The bug is that this file is never deleted by xemacs, so after a few months there are large numbers of these files sitting in my home directory. In GNU-Emacs, there is some code in the kill-emacs function in src/emacs.c that cleans up the .saves files, but the corresponding functionality appears to be missing from the xemacs version. The code from GNU-Emacs looks like this, and is called just before exit(). /* If we have an auto-save list file, kill it because we are exiting Emacs deliberately (not crashing). Broken operating systems.... 25 years

I have recently stumbled across a nice, wonderful, PITA, er, issue with the implementation of open with O_CREAT and dangling symlinks. Simply put, under some Linux kernels (2.4.0-test1*, at least), O_CREAT will not follow dangling symlinks - instead, -ENOENT in returned. This is not a /good/ thing, given that the implementation of saving files under XEmacs will cause any file opened through a symlink to become a dangling symling before it tries to create it. This is, um, not very good. Now, I have opened a discussion about this with the people responsible for it but, for now, XEmacs will not work on this system. In the short term[1], is it worth my while putting together a patch to fix this in XEmacs by resolving the output filename and only ever passing the real name to the system? I had a glance at the code and this is, um, non-trivial to do, I think. Especially as it would mean potentially dealing with GC. I will put in the effort if needed, though. window-system independent GUI specifications... 25 years

I was bored on the plane ride home, so I started writing some of the generic UI code instead of documentation. :) Basically, this is similar to the glyph stuff andy did, but pops up in its own window instead of being embedded in a buffer or gutter area. The one thing I don't like is the radio-group requirement. I would prefer to have used the :selected bit, but updates were a real problem there. You can get away with it in the menu because you can update them just before you pop them up, but with long-lived visible widgets, you'd want it to update asynchronously. I didn't want to use an idle timer, because that seemed like it would chew up a huge amount of CPU usage, etc. Then again, I hate the :selected bits for radio buttons anyway. :) -Bill P.

The "p" in pdump is there for a reason. The question is whether you/we/somebody else[1] wants to chase down the problem with the black art of normal dumping or that the time isn't better spend completing the pdump support. font-lock-mode and beta32--beta34 25 years

Hi! Is there a known problem with the font-lock-mode in the xemacs-21.2-beta32++? When I try M-x font-lock-mode with the fundamental mode, the xemacs crashes with a seg-fault. (in linux/glib2.1).
