Sort of. We got `kbd' along with the edmacro package, which I've basically rewritten from scratch. I considered the kbd syntax "cooler" and in some cases more clear than what we currently use. I've never intended it to be a complete replacement for our define-key syntax.

Because introducing symbols like C-S-space is very very ugly and because the strings are already taken for and old incompatible syntax. What is also very inconsistent is that the vector notation (which I like in general) takes symbols for the names of some keys and characters for others. They're both on the long side and conflict with icomplete. Please do not put this patch into XEmacs without providing a way to turn it off. The current prompts are terse and allow clever packages to make clever use of the minibuffer that they wouldn't be able to do with longer prompts. Verbosity for verbosity sake is not a win, IMO.

If the outside markers are getting screwed, then it's a bug. What I was talking about are the markers and extents within the region. I had no idea the about outside ones. The implementation of decode-coding-region is very simple, and looking at it, I don't see how the markers get broken.
