If the font already exists we shouldn't touch it.[1] Would it be possible to defer all settings of fonts and to defer the splash screen until *after* .emacs is run? I guess I should look up what changed between b65 and b66 that could cause the effect we're seeing. (I need more hours in a day!) Missed patch to etags.el 25 years, 7 months

I'm not sure that it's possible, since you may want to change your fonts in .emacs, and we don't want them to then be overridden by make-font-italic and friends. -- Colin

i tried to compile 21.2.13 on a sun. after the first problem, of the -Bexport which i removed, it failed like this: . . . Loading site-load... (296) Finding pointers to doc strings... italic font size 25 years, 7 months

Hi I have encountererd something quite bizzare: italic fonts tend to be larger than the normal ones: if i set: Emacs.default.attributeFont: -*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* italics are larger than 160. if i set it to 100, italics are still larger even then 120. If i set: Emacs.default.attributeFont: -*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* Emacs.italic.attributeFont: -*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* all goes fine, till i use info: the info node face, whice is bold italic, goes again larger than should be... :( anyone see something like that? my "installation": uname -a: SunOS corvette 5.5 Generic_103093-14 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCstation-5 ./configure '--gung-ho' '--prefix=/users/98/maths/pezz/local' '--debug=no' '--error-checking=none' '--memory-usage-stats=no' '--dynamic=yes' '--with-clash-detection' XEmacs 21.0-b67 "20 minutes to Nikko" configured for `sparc-sun-solaris2.5'. Oh, I see. Yes, read-only strings would be very useful, for one. For example, symbol name strings could be immutable. I guess we'd need it in Lisp to be able to move some C code to Lisp. That's the only reason that would make sense.

You are right. Maybe the solution is simply to always store the symbol referenced by a pure structure to Vpure_uninterned_symbol_table. Does uncommenting the "if (!NILP (XSYMBOL (obj)->obarray)) return obj;" part fix your crash? If yes, we should investigate how large the Vpure_uninterned_symbol_table ends up. If not very large, then that's probably a good fix.
