I'm most of the way through rewriting the URL loading for Emacs/W3. In the
process, I'm making the URL library much more standalone. This means that
it would be much easier to include just it in the base XEmacs tarball and
use it for package retrieval, etc. This way a user would be able to stick
FTP and HTTP URLs in the package directory list, and all would be well
with the world.
The new HTTP loader is 100% asynchronous, and does all the work of waiting
for headers, decoding 'chunked' transfer-encodings, parsing headers, etc,
with after-change-functions. It will be up to the calling application to
deal with making it a synchronous operation.
I'm probably going to be hacking on this late tonight, so I hope to have
something I can ship out to the w3-(beta|dev) and xemacs-beta lists
tomorrow.

Redraw bug on Windows native build

Hi,
I'm relatively new to XEmacs, so apologies if this issue is already known - I did search the archives and couldn't find an obvious
reference...
The native build of 21.2.20 on Win32 has a redraw bug. I checked 20.2.19, and the bug isn't in there, so it appeared between 19 and
20.
To demonstrate the bug, just start 21.2.20, and then immediately drag the right hand edge of the window out. The newly exposed area
doesn't redraw. Actually, it does redraw a few seconds later.
I haven't any experience with the XEmacs sources, so I'm afraid I don't know where to begin to look for a solution. Also, I haven't
got CVS access set up, so I can't check whether it's been fixed since 20.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to hack on it right now... have to get
back to real work and housebreaking the new puppy. :)

Id don't claim at all to understand that code. But this changes an
inconsistency with the rest of the code although I cannot see how it
could matter unless the class got subclassed behind our back. This is
also closer to the Motif code.

Hi,
I've applied a number of patches to the CVS archive of
xemacs-packages. For details, please check the ChangeLog files.
These are (besides w3) patches from before september 1999 which Jan
forwarded me.
I've pasted together the cvs commit messages and appended them
below. This way it should be clear what has been added.
I've given most patches only minimal testing - they do compile
cleanly. Therefore I'm asking others to check that the patches are
working fine.

I didn't mean for those to get into the CVS tree - I was playing around
with them. They work ok for me here. If you grep for (fboundp 'progress)
in w3-parse.el and url-http.el, you should be able to remove them easily.
Or just (fmakunbound 'progress)

up to date sumo package?

The latest xemacs-sumo tarball in ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/packages
is dated July 29, but it is named xemacs-sumo.tar.gz, not
xemacs-sumo-<date>.tar.gz, as described in README.packages. There is
a xemacs-sumo tarball so named dated July 13. This is about 5 months
old. Is this really up to date? If not, are there plans to build a
up to date xemacs-sumo tarball?

Using mktemp for temporary files

A couple of scripts create temporary files - but those names are easy
to guess and could lead to security problems. A better solution would
be to use mktemp.
I've got here a patch which does the following:

What strikes me is that I don't know whether type -p is available in
/bin/sh.
Besides, does anybody have better ideas to rewrite this. There are a
number of other scripts which needs rewriting. I've some likes to do
this, I can forward the complete patch set I have.
