To reiterate, I'm running XEmacs on Sun Solaris 2.5.1 and displaying
onto a 16-bit color depth X server on Intel Linux.

O.K. Ignoring color depth issues, does this image work for you (Sun
Solaris -> Intel Linux)? This is a grey scale image with 215 colors.
PNG, GIF and TIFF conversions all appear the same in my test.
