I am currently using my modified movemail to retrieve and filter my mail via pop3 (a bit like procmail and movemail combined) for gnus. This is ok but is slow and presents no feedback to the user under mswindows. I notice that gnus distributes pop3.el but doesn't appear to use it. I also notice that vm includes its own pop access. Is it worth trying to unify these different lisp-based access methods (and add my filtering) and squeeze some more speed in the process? What does vm-pop do that pop3 doesn't? Does anyone use pop3.el with gnus? That whole part of auto-save.el is broken. (See the mapc's that come after it). That load time initialisation stuff should be moved to startup/init time. auto-save-directory-fallback vs. binary kits 27 years

I've gotten reports from people who have downloaded my prebuilt XEmacs for WinNT that there are problems related to autosaving. The variable "auto-save-directory-fallback" is getting set to "C:\\cgw\\.autosave", which creates problems.... auto-save.el has this code: (defvar auto-save-directory-fallback (expand-file-name "~/.autosave/") The expansion of "~" seems to be getting done at compile-time rather than run-time, so people who download my binary kit get stuck with my value of "~". How are people who build binary kits dealing with this issue?

gnus patch to support movemail enhancements 27 years

Gnus v5.6.43 XEmacs 21.0 "Pyrenean-pre2" [Lucid] (i586-pc-cygwin32) of Mon Oct 12 1998 on ARMAGEDON 200 red.parallax.co.uk NNTPcache server V1.0.7.1 Oct 31 1997 ready (posting ok). I would appreciate it if this patch could be applied to gnus. It simply allows extra arguments to be given to movemail. I use it to selectively download mail using pop. The enhanced movemail should appear in an XEmacs of the future (21.2?). movemail pop patches 27 years

I've been using these for a while and they work fine. I have been holding out posting them because I wanted them to go in 21.1. However that seems as far as off as ever. I don't think there's any harm putting these in 21.0, but I guess 21.2 will do also. AFAIK you still have to have explicit permission from ascom it is just that they have a policy of granting them for non-commercial use. Anyway you better use something like blowfish that is totally free anyway. Jan P.S.
