File-coding and -O3? 26 years, 1 month

I've noticed that file-coding doesn't work under cygwin when compiled with -O3. I'm wondering if anyone using egcs 1.x on x86 (e.g. linux) sees the same problem? Basically compile with file-coding and open a dos-style text file. Richard Stallman: Emacs 19 26 years, 1 month

I think that it's very interesting to see how RMS' tune has changed over the years. Initially he was so worried that Lucid would ask people to stop hacking on FSF's version of GNU Emacs (never happened), but said that *he* would never do so. However, for several years now, he's been doing exactly that. Rather than just letting the quality of `competing' (at least in his mind) free software speak for itself, he finds the need to plead to people to stay with him. In fact many of the XEmacs developers continue to contribute to FSF's Emacs. Most XEmacs package developers try to keep their code compatible with both versions. It's quite clear to those of us who've seen the situation unfold that there's really only one stick-in-the-mud who insists on generating the tensions around this issue. And for what it's worth, the silliness about signing legal papers hadn't started yet when the schism occurred. Claiming that this was an attempt to ``gain a short-term advantage'' is just another bit of RMS revisionist history. Before long we'll be hearing about how Richard and Jamie jumped him in an alley while he was walking home after fully implementing all of the new features himself, stole his code, and then presented it as their own :-) Maybe *that's* why years later he has to handle the situation with all of the maturity of my children fighting over a toy. bzip2, please get it 26 years, 1 month

[Cc'ed to the bzip2 author] US Mirror: http://www.digistar.com/bzip2/ Main Site: (Very slow in the USA) http://www.muraroa.demon.co.uk/ A copy has been placed on the XEmacs FTP site: ftp://ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/aux/bzip2-0.9.0b.tar.gz Due to the better level of compression given by bzip2, I will start uploading XEmacs releases to ftp.xemacs.org as .tar.bz2 files instead of the bulkier .tar.gz. The 21.0 release (whenever that will be) will have both .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 files. Both egcs and the Linux kernel have been issuing simultaneous .tar.gz and .tar.bz2 files and it's time we do too. Note that the bzip2 webpage includes a patch to GNU tar so `tar z' can work on them. The current version comes with a library just like zlib. It might be an interesting project to bind it at the lisp level as a loadable module or something like that. Someone who can, might wish to create binaries and a DLL for microsoft windows, in which case they should be added to aux/ as well. For those who had problems with previous versions of bzip2, please give this a try and let me know how things go.
