Works fine on my Debian woody box. Note it's --pdump --use-union-type
with assorted Mule and Athena 3D features. Haven't used it to edit,
but it starts and exits in the usual way.

I've seen this with (1) insufficient file system space for the whole
core file, it won't read the truncated one, and (2) with old versions
of gdb working with xemacsen produced by more recent gcc (but that was
at least a year ago).
