Just scanning through the configure.ac code to see what might cause this...
Are you also specifying --with-vdb=mach? If so, take that out and see
if it works. Check out lines 1446 - 1468.

I configure --with-newgc frequently on my Intel Mac, but never saw the
problem you hit since my configure arguments also set the VDB
explicitly. Thus, I missed that configure fails to determine the right
virtual-dirty-bit write barrier on 64-bit Macs.
This patch fixes it, I'll commit in a few days, if nobody objects.

Thanks, Marcus! That fixes the build for me.
I'm still having allocation problems leading quick crashes with glyphs
and in Xft. I suspect my X11 installation is broken (very easy to do
on Mac and I've got an old installation "Snow Leopard"). I'll let you
know if I learn more and it seems more like newgc is the problem.

Ah, a couple of the mac buildbots have this problem. I never got
around to digging into why or even reporting this to any one but Mats,
but I see Marcus Crestani has a fix. When that patch goes in, I guess
we'll see those mac buildbots turning green then.

With the fix in, the Mac buildbots are green again.
