If by "FTP" you mean "EFS" (ie, you are using the "C-x C-f
user@host:path RET" syntax to access the remote file, then it is
probably an EFS issue. Please use efs-report-bug to format and send a
bug report to the EFS maintainer (who does read this list, but he'd
just tell you the same thing). Do so _after_ eliciting the bug. The
efs-report-bug buffer will provide some advice on reporting the bug.
Finally, you should try (setq debug-on-error t) (or do the same thing
from the Options->Troubleshooting menu), elicit the bug, and paste the
resulting backtrace into your bug report.
You might also try updating XEmacs and the efs package (XEmacs is
quite old, and efs is reasonably fresh but I'm pretty sure not totally
up-to-date: it's the version I have ;-).
