sure that even Motif protocol won't take that long.)

Unfortunately my computer becomes quite unusable after that. X process
jumps to 100% CPU usage, XEmacs process jumps to 40% (it's a SMP system).

Yes.

interprogram-cut-function
`interprogram-cut-function' is a variable declared in Lisp.
Value: own-clipboard
interprogram-paste-function
`interprogram-paste-function' is a variable declared in Lisp.
Value: get-clipboard-foreign
x-selection-strict-motif-ownership
`x-selection-strict-motif-ownership' is a built-in boolean variable.
Value: t
The values are the same for "xemacs -vanilla". Setting the last variable
to "nil" doesn't fix the problem.
BTW: The problem is the same with Ctrl-W (kill-region).

prevent the busy loop by preventing you from pasting to other programs
at all. Beyond that, we don't at the moment have resources to work on
this.
If that workaround is not acceptable but you still want to use XEmacs,
you could build with some other widget set than Motif, which is a
historical source of many bugs. Or you could try a different
distribution of Motif.

You probably misunderstood. I set 'x-selection-strict-motif-ownership'
to nil and that didn't fix the problem.
I've set 'interprogram-cut-function' to nil and the problem went away.
But of course that means you can't use copy & paste out of the XEmacs
windows anymore :-(

Have you tried it? I have `interprogram-cut-function' set to nil,
and cut-and-paste still works, although I do have intermittent issues.

Even if you set interprogram-{cut,paste}-function to nil, you can
still use C-insert and Sh-insert to copy between XEmacs and other

I set interprogram-cut-function to nil and Ctrl-W & Meta-W didn't cause
the loop anymore. But pressing the "Copy" button caused the loop again :-(
I've now recompiled it using athena widgets and dialogs and the problem
is gone. Also "gtk" worked OK but unfortunately that is still GTK1 and
not GTK2 :-(
