How do I find out what my current default font setting is? I haven't
set it within emacs. If I do Options/edit faces and look for default,
it doesn't say anything about the font name.

Run ktrace, strace, truss or whatever with XEmacs and check which
resource files are loaded. May be ~/.Xdefaults, XFree's options files or
whatever.

You can do m-x list-faces-display and look at the font-spec
Or you can just look at:
(font-truename (face-font 'default))
Of course, this doesn't do anything to tell you why the font is
configured that way.

Thanks. I've managed to find a font I like for xemacs
-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
I'm playing with kdevelop and trying to use the same font. For some
reason, it looks crappy in kdevelop but fine with xemacs. I guess the
reason is that xfontsel says that
-adobe-courier-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
matches 9 fonts. It seems kdevelop only lets me specify family and
point size, so I'm guessing it's picking another font that meets the
spec but looks crappy?

It's A Sign(tm). Don't Use KDE. :-)

might find useful if you like fiddling with colors and stuff. You don't
need to go to extremes, though:

Note that the above pattern will usually match two different fonts:
adobe-courier and bitstream-courier. bitstream-courier usually looks
messy; it appears that the resolution (dpi) is wrong.

No apologies necessary, it's not. We need to be able to interoperate
with K and Q and G window managers etc. We may have to document that
"you have to do it inside XEmacs if you want the "right" answer", but
it should be documented at least.
