No, it is not yet committed to XEmacs CVS.

Probably yes.
Of course it needs to be fixed upstream in ispell.el as well, the bug
still exists in the latest upstream version.
I already tried to contact the author of ispell.el but received no
reply.

reason is the ESCaped string "ESC$B$5$s$O=q$-$^$7$?ESC(B:" in the
attribution line and after the signature that Mike seems to have
added.
I emphasize "seems", as I have no way of finding out if something in
my chain of POPping puts that in. It is unlikely, because it only
seems to affect Mike's posting, but you never know.
So I have three questions:
1) Is the escaped string for real and if so, what does it mean (looks
like some command to a terminal driver)
2) How can I prevent XEmacs to display it and keep running?
3) As I consider this a bug - how can I fix it?

I can't read it off hand, but that's just Japanese text in the
Internet standard ISO-2022-JP encoding.

I think it's possible to tell Gnus not to display mail or MIME parts
in the ISO-2022-JP encoding, but then you don't get to see the mail at
all.
You could use a Mule XEmacs, or avoid Gnus. Gnus is not an MUA, it's
an Emacs torture test. (I'm half serious---I far prefer VM for mail,
but with the exception of my Red Hat Sparc/Linux libc 5 + some 4
+ some 6 that I was running in 1998, I've seen more crashes in Gnus
than all other contexts combined, so I run Gnus).

I'd suggest a full bug report with M-x report-xemacs-bug. Maybe
there's something odd about your configuration; I know that several
people are using no-Mule XEmacsen 21.4 with Gnus and reading this list.
First try a clean replication. Copy the file into a fresh temporary
directory somewhere. Restart XEmacs with the -vanilla switch. Start
Gnus. Try reading the file as a mailbox, etc (Gnus provides several
ways) until you find one that works. See if you crash.
Then restart and format and send the report.
