21.5.27 native binary for Windows (Vista Ultimate with all updates).
I'm trying to use Xemacs under Vista Ultimate....everything works well
except when I try to update the package index, ftp doesn't work. I get
a popup dialog that says "*ftp anonymous(a)ftp.xemacs.org* seems not a
pty. Kill?"
I have cygwin installed on this machine, but use Windows' ftp (besides I
don't find a cygwin ftp.exe in .../bin/). I've googled for the above
error message and there are posts about it but I've not been able to
find a clear solution.
My real objective is to run gnus. When I try that an error message in
the minibuffer window appears: "Cannot open load file: %s: sha1".
I have Xemacs working great on an XP Pro machine, and hope it can work
equally well with Vista. Hey I'd rather be using Unix or a variant,
but....

Can you run ftp from the command line? If so, find out what ftp
command is running and set efs-ftp-program-name to that program.

Thanks to all for the replies. Setting efs-ftp-program-name to the full
Windows pathname for Vista's ftp command didn't seem to help. At one
point I had package-install things working, but I can't remember what I
did and it doesn't now. M-x ftp seems to work, though the ftp buffer
mostly doesn't show responses from servers. To get gnus working I had to
load an encryption package; ecrypto I think.
I'll keep poking around trying to get the package-install to work.
BTW I'm using .28 beta now.

I suspect you need to use Cygwin's ftp. If you press C-g at the point
you see the message, is there anything in the *ftp ...* buffer?

For a short-term fix, you can always download the tarball manually and
drop it in the installation.
