Coverity, under contract to the US Department of Homeland Security
(DHS), has scanned over 2,500 open source projects for defects using
their (proprietary) automated defect detection technology.
GNU Emacs is one of the projects that they've scanned and has advanced
to Rung 1 and is apparently fixing bugs discovered by the Coverity
scanning.
I'd like to see XEmacs included in this effort, and I volunteer being
the XEmacs point of contact, the person responsible for submitting
releases to be scanned and for filing the resulting bug reports.

Over the summer of 2006, I had the opportunity to use several source
code scanners that were licensed by the lab I was visiting. I took
the opportunity to run them over the XEmacs code base at that time.
If you look at the ChangeLogs for that summer, you'll see I did a
bunch of bug fixing. I never addressed all of the issues those
scanners found, and some of the scanner versions were old even then.
I was impressed with the subtlety of the bugs those scanners turned
up. I think this would be really great. Go for it!

I got through to David Maxwell of Coverity, the person in charge of
the open source scanning project, and got the needed information to
start scanning (which just finished.)
I'll try and submit the emitted files (i.e. the results of the scan)
to scan.coverity.com before I go on vacation and I'll post the results
of the analysis to xemacs-buildreports(a)xemacs.org.

Total silence from Coverity. "scan-admin(a)coverity.com" seems to be a
black hole.
I've sent my third email with no response. I'm going to give them a
little more time, but next week I'm going to start using the phone.
I have three possible contacts at Coverity:
- David Maxwell, the open source guy ＠ Coverity
- a friend who happens to work there, but in the field/sales
- Dawson Engler, via a former Stanford CS professor, a Turing award
winner & my father-in-law ;-)
Does anyone have other suggestions for whom[1] else I could contact?

[1] I had the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese some 20 years ago.
My reaction at the time was that, if I didn't already know any
European or Asian languages, I would rather learn Mandarin than
English. I also didn't realize just how idiomatic English is until I
started trying to translate my English thoughts into spoken Mandarin.
