I would use procmail to split the incoming mail into a Gnus spool and
a VM spool, and then tell each of them where to look.

Of course, if you POP it, then you would have a harder time (unless
you could fetchmail it (into procmail)).

Not neccessarily.  I have thought about doing something like this
myself.
