This is a problem that popped up after a software upgrade for Sun Ray
Server Software on Solaris. The fonts on the XEmacs menu were almost
illegible. I haven't been able to track down where this is coming from
and I have never seen a similar problem in over a decade of use with
XEmacs on Solaris. But, I just wanted to mention that there is a simple
fix for these X related issues if anyone has forgotten. I managed to
fix it by copying the etc/Emacs.ad file that comes with XEmacs to
/usr/openwin/lib/app-defaults/XEmacs and making a few edits (replacing
Emacs* with XEmacs*). I guess for non-Solaris users, it would be
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/XEmacs (as it alludes to in the file). This
had me up and running again in a matter of minutes. The hardest part
was finding Emacs.ad since I didn't recognize the suffix.

Did the fonts supplied by Sun change? What is the configuration of
your XEmacs?
The solution shouldn't have any effect, as AFAIK Emacs.ad is generated
from the defaults in XEmacs. I'll have to look at what's going on
here more carefully.

Oh, I trust your observation that it worked! I'm just surprised, and
therefore my knowledge is incomplete. :-)
Thanks for the Installation. Obviously your XEmacs configuration is
about as vanilla as it gets, so something changed in Sun's X11
installation.

And, I'm quite thankful that it worked since it was distracting, but I
suppose I would have gotten used to it. The only thing that may have
changed on the X11 side AFAICT is libXext.so, but I don't know what that
is. I imagine some things may have changed on the JDS/GNOME side, but I
don't understand that stuff at all.

Although libXext did change (and is used by XEmacs), I don't think that
is where the problem is coming from. I had been using XEmacs from the
OpenCSW project since it includes all of the dependencies. And, then I
would rebuild XEmacs from source with the configure options that I
wanted. This would save me from having to build any dependencies. But
OpenCSW replaces some of the system libraries which was causing XEmacs
to be built without Xpm. If I build XEmacs without OpenCSW, then I do
get Xpm support back. And, my workaround is no longer necessary.
However, I'm still not sure exactly what went wrong yet; and it may have
been a combination of factors.
