actually
tries to set the 0 sizes?
Anything is possible, but it would be interesting to know why your
system was tweaked. I don't have source to the local X environment on
hand, so I can't readily check.
I picked up that patch and applied it (by hand; for some perverse
reason I can't explain, patch(1) claimed every single hunk "FAILED",
so I did it myself the old-fashioned way) and have recompiled. It's
been a couple hours now, with gdb lying in wait for its prey, and no
exit forthcoming. Looks promising.
If this patch isn't in CVS yet, it probably ought to be.
