I picked up that patch and applied it (by hand; for some perverse reason I can't explain, patch(1) claimed every single hunk "FAILED", so I did it myself the old-fashioned way) and have recompiled. It's been a couple hours now, with gdb lying in wait for its prey, and no exit forthcoming. Looks promising. If this patch isn't in CVS yet, it probably ought to be.
