I tried building xemacs on OSX 10.9.5 for the first time yesterday. I
had previously built xemacs on OSX (10.x) without problems.
The first issue is that --with-tls is the default. Compile fails
because xemacs is using lots of deprecated (in 10.7?) ssh
functions. (More on that in a separate email later if I can find the
appropriate fix.) In the meantime, I just built using
--without-tls. No problems.
Another issue is that when I configure using --with-xft=emacs,
configure wants to find freetype/config/ftheader.h. However, on my mac
(with XQuartz libraries), that file is in
freetype2/config/ftheader.h. I just hacked configure.ac to add this:

I also had to configure using 'CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/X11/include/freetype2'.
The hack was just to get xemacs to build. I'll see if can come up with
a better fix.

No GNUtls? You may not get a lot of help for a while because gnutls
will be the default (to maximize Emacs compatibility -- Emacs only
supports GNUtls), and Jerry prefers NSS (at least when wearing his
Fedora hat). If you're willing to deal with that, we'd really
appreciate your help with OpenSSL issues since it is a very popular
implementation. Otherwise things would probably be more
straightforward if you install GNUtls via MacPorts of HomeBrew.

There's a configure idiom for checking OS and or for lists of usual
locations. Remind us if this doesn't get fixed, I'm sure it's easy as

own crypto library. Thus, I'm not going to do anything about it. But
maybe configure should detect that and disable tls (with a warning?)
on OSX > 10.7?

I took the lazy way out and installed gnutls from macports. This
works, but I have to tell configure about gnutls using
--with-site-includes=/opt/local/include
--with-site-libs=/opt/local/lib LIBS=-lgnutls
LIBS was needed because early in configure, a test build fails without
linking -lgnutls, and this was my quick hack to make it work.

What is the name of that library? I'm mostly on Mac OS X these days
so maybe I can work on supporting it. (Only if you remember offhand,
otherwise I'll bruteforce google and Apple docs myself.)
