The FreeBSD and OpenBSD projects use ctm to distribute updates for the
source and even the cvs repository. Ctm is reliable and well tested. It
makes a file called 'delta', which contains the changes in a directory
tree since its last run, gzip's it and mails it out, preferrably to a
mailing list. Run by cron daily it is sort of "set up and forget", as
long as diskspace is sufficient. :)
The only thing that needs to be done manually, is to supply a new
snapshot tar.gz-file of the ctm target directory every few month. It is
needed by new users to bootstrap. After a new user subscribed to the
ctm-list and received the first delta, he would ftp the snapshot file
and the delta files made between the one he had in the mail and this
snapshot.
If the cvs repository is distributed by ctm, people can use cvs locally
with all its features, without need for a leased line. This is optimal
for (us) poor modem users...
Ctm is written in C, not in Modula as CVSup.
Actually, it would be fun to automagically trigger the mirror
on
Steve's "Subject: .*XEmacs.*released.*" mails to xemacs-announce :-)
It is a good idea to mail out the log messages of the cvs commits to
a mailing list. People can track the development easily, and know
when to update their local sources.

available, but CVSup is the recommended way to go (it was originally

CVSup is VERY nice. Really. I'll have to see if I can help Steve
get it running.

Assuming this isn't a joke, I'll point out that free is already about as
cheap as you can get. I typically shell out a whopping $2.00[1] to either
Linux Systems Labs (www.lsl.com) or Cheap Bytes (www.cheapbytes.com) to
get the latest Slackware on a CD for convenience, but I have at times
downloaded the whole thing.

others to order with you. Even at $7.00 total, it's really not so
bad. Both ship very quickly and have lots of other interesting titles.

I'll take a stab at doing a Linux port of CVSup, as it's pretty nice.
However, I know nothing about Linux, except that there're lots of
different variants, and so I'd like some recommendations on which
distribution to get. I don't want to waste time with installation/setup
issues, and so I'd like to know what I should get (it also has to be
compatible with what Steve has).

Link statically and it doesn't matter. Dynamic linking/loading is
evil anyway :-)
I like the Slackware distribution because you can do a very lean
installation, but it still comes with a lot of stuff if you want to do
a more complete installation. For a *long* time, I ran a Slackware
distribution with X11, Emacs, XEmacs and CMUCL on 150Mb of disk (which
included about 12Mb set aside for swap). I tried out RedHat, but a
lot of the details kind of turned me off so I went back to Slackware.
The kernel version sometimes matters, but usually only for
bleeding-edge hardware support. If you want to use your parallel port
Sparq drive without adding your own kernel module, you need to be on
2.0.35 or better. If you're doing normal software development, it
really doesn't even matter which kernel you're using.
BTW, I don't think that whoever built the 20.4 Linux release built the
tools statically. If I'm remembering correctly, this took extra
effort when I did it, just specifying a static built only affects the
XEmacs executable. As it stands now, when I install XEmacs 20.4 on
Slackware 3.5 (Linux 2.0.34 kernel), I have to play some games (lying
about dynamic library version numbers through symbolic linking) to get
etags to work.
Really, really, really, distributed executables should be built
statically, especially for Linux.
