Sure. I was just wondering if you might have some foo-xemacs package
installed that caused weird side effects. I've had several bug
reports against the Fedora XEmacs that turned out to be caused by
badly written add-on packages.

presence/absence of some optional part of the X stack?

available on RHEL, Solaris and SUSE;
the platforms where 411 has been replicated? Yes, I guess it's
possible:o)

Remember that it works for me. So it is possible that I have some
obscure optional thing installed that makes stuff work, but which is
not installed by default.

RHEL/Fedora/CentOS are setup to do everything in UTF-8 these days.
Your environment appears to be some weird mix of UTF-8 (LANG) and
ISO-8859-1 (everything else). This rings a bell with me, because
Ville added a patch to the Fedora build many moons ago, named
xemacs-21.5.26-utf8-fonts.patch, that does this:

understand the failure mode you're experiencing, but try letting your
environment be pure UTF-8 and see if that has any effect.
